I did something bad. I guess I’ve done it before but I looked at Ts linked in profile. Is he going to be mad and terminate me for that? I’m worried. I do that sometimes because I miss him in between sessions and since right now I am not seeing him in person. Is he going to abandon me if I come clean? I am worried he is going to abandon me during pandemic. There’s something in his profile that I saw before but I never focused much attention on it but now I have ii guess because of the pandemic.

If he didn't want clients looking at his LinkedIn profile, he shouldn't have one. It's not exactly cyber stalking.

A LinkedIn profile is publicly available. He shouldn't have anything on there he is not comfortable with his clients seeing. It would be different if you made up a fake name and befriended him on Facebook or something. This seems harmless to me.

I consider a LinkedIn profile to be a professional site. So I think you're fine.

Please don't worry. I've done similar and worse. We each find our ways to be close to T during the week.

Oh and I’ve done much worse than that. Told T about most of it, at various times. He wasn’t thrilled but we talked about it, and it was ok.

I have also done far more intrusive searches than this. I have never discussed it with my therapist because I feel shame about it. I don't want her to know that I sometimes seek a connection. I prefer to steal it and keep it secret. Of all the searches I have done, her LinkedIn profile is probably one I would be relatively relaxed about mentioning because, as LT has said, it is professional. No one here knows whether your therapist will be mad and you won't know for sure until you tell them. It's more important that you can work through any potential negative reaction rather than hoping to avoid it. Assuming your therapist is a decent one, of course...

I told me super uptight stick to the ethics by the book T that I looked at her LinkedIn site and she was fine with it. It is a professional site so she didn’t have a problem with it. I actually found a typo and she was grateful that I told her. Facebook would have been a different story.

Why would they know? Why would you tell them if you are afraid of them knowing? I don't think a client who looks up a public profile is doing anything wrong. But I also don't know why it would need to be discussed with the therapist you hire. And if they got angry over such a thing, then I think it would be good to know so you can get rid of the angry one and find a therapist who is less of an assholic jerk.

SD basically said what I came here to say. Also add me to the "I've done a lot worse searching" club.

My T isn’t exactly “normal” with his boundaries with me but he actually gave me the link to a source of information related to him that is more personal than LinkedIn. It is still a public site that anyone could have access to or find out about without his knowing.
Just a heads up though, even though my T gave me the link he is a little uneasy/awkward discussing it. If he hadn’t actually given me the link I would have misread his uneasyness as disapproval. I think it is just one of those things he knows is out there, he knows people can find but it can still feel a little awkward on both sides? __________________ There’s been many a crooked path that has landed me here Tired, broken and wearing rags Wild eyed with fear -Blackmoores Night |

It depends. LinkedIn allows you to pay a fee and then you know who looked at your profile. So he may know if he is a member. |

If there is a way for the therapist to know, I still would not bring it up. Not everything needs to be discussed. Or use a friend's profile to look them up.

I didn’t realise the internet stalking was such a thing with therapists. I tried to add mine on Facebook once, and I was pretty upset when he didn’t accept it. I understand now, it probably wouldn’t be very helpful for me to see photos of him and his wife, family etc. I don’t think people’s profiles really tell you much about who they are at all. I guess we all want to feel close to them though.

Mine friended me on facebook from her personal page. She is also famous so she told me to look her upon google to find out more about her.
Looking at Linked In is no crime. It is a public site. |
