****Long story short I’m too anxious to get a counselor for my anxiety****

Obviously, with the current state of things this won’t be happening too soon, but I’ve been wanting to see a counselor for my anxiety and numerous other concerns of mine. I’ve never had any sort of counseling or therapy before and now that it’s available through my college I wanted to try but honestly every time I go to the website to see how to set up an appointment I have an anxiety attack and end up crying for about 2 hours.

Anyone have a similar experience? Any tips for preparing myself to talk to a therapist?

I want to have an official diagnosis so I can better understand my difficulties and explore options for treatment. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to PC,
For me, even after 10+ T’s over 30+ years (for anxiety and CPTSD) that initial call is always the hardest. It took me a month of writing and rewriting an email to my current T. So, my experience is that it gets easier (slowly) after initially reaching out. The anxiety before that first season is really hard too.
If I had to do my therapy experience over again my advice would be don’t settle for someone you don’t feel comfortable with.

When reaching out to all my Ts. I had the same anxiety. Honestly, I had people I was close to supporting and encouraging me all the way. Then after the initial email was sent I wanted so badly to back out. Again, I had to rely on a couple people in my life for encouragement.

In my experience, the first session has always been an intake, where they ask you a bunch of questions and try to determine what you are there for and how they can help you. It's scarier waiting for the appointment in my opinion than the actual appointment. Maybe you could have a friend help you make the appointment?
