He called to tell me that for the last 6 blood draws my platelets are getting higher and he has never seen this before. I get weekly blood draws so we are able to track the trend. It started at 483 and hit a high last week at 631. So now I have to wait until Tuesday to see my primary care doctor. It is never good when the pdoc calls on a weekend. I just need to know it is going to be ok. 2020 has sucked for me already. I thought I was done with that.

I had a high platelet count come back after annual bloodwork last year. My primary care physician felt certain it was a lab error (apparently a very common lab error). He had me wait about a month and had the bloodwork done again. Completely normal second time. Don’t panic yet.

I'm so sorry; I know that miserable feeling of having to wait to find out the cause of a medical issue. Try to do some calming activities and remember to breathe well. You know the routine.

And here's the thing...yes, high platelets can indicate cancer. But they can also indicate a vitamin B12 deficiency, a "general inflammation" (so your body is fighting a virus or injury) - and even high anxiety can cause high platelets...plus a bunch of very treatable reasons can cause it. And what AW pointed out...lab error or just an unexplainable fluke.

So there are many reasons for a high platelet count. If your googling like crazy, try not to. I have done that so many times and gotten myself into a vicious state of anxiety - then I go to the doctor and all the scary stuff I was sure I had turned out to be a simple, fixable basically nothing.

Yeah I had low platelets come back recently. I got them redrawn a few days later and they were normal. They figured it was just a lab error- very common.

I hope you end up alright!

Doctor wasn’t too worried about the platelet levels but did order more test. She also thinks I need my gall bladder removed. So no real answer just need more test. I am also anorexic because I have lost 15 pounds. She thought about putting me in the hospital a few days to straighten out my stomach.
