I’ve been charged by my counselor’s office for telehealth visits that my insurance covers. Some of them were billed incorrectly and some of them they just haven’t reimbursed me for. They probably owe me about $200. I’ve tried for more than a month to resolve the issue and they continue to blow me off. I like the counselor. What do I do? I finally got upset this evening and told the billing person I would report them to the Better Business Bureau. I don’t want this issue to ruin the relationship with my counselor but why should I pay money that my insurance company will easily reimburse them? Also, they continue to make mistakes on my bill so I’m apprehensive to keep seeing my counselor when they will likely continue to mistakenly bill me for visits as in-office that are actually telehealth.

Sorry you're dealing with this. First, have you contacted your insurance company directly? It could be an issue with someone at your insurance company, as we've had some problems with things being randomly rejected lately for not including certain information, when they didn't need that info in the past (and there's not even a spot on the reimbursement form for it!) Or there was a time in the past where someone at the insurance company keyed something in with the wrong year, then denied it, because they said I'd waited a year to submit it. When, I hadn't even been seeing that therapist a year before...

Also, have you tried talking to your actual counselor about it? They might be able to talk to the billing person on your behalf. It's also possible that your counselor messed up a code in your chart or in what they passed along to the billing person. Or if they don't know what the problem is, maybe they could let you carry a balance on your account for a bit while the insurance company resolves the issue. Hope you can get it figured out!

Thank you. These are some good suggestions that I had not thought of.

I have made repeated attempts to contact the owner and she continues to blow me off. I looked over my bank statements and EOBs and they owe me a little over $300. I was able to get reimbursed for $125 or it would have been over $400. I called my insurance and they couldn’t advise me what to do but did tell me my calculations were accurate and that it would be no problem for the counseling office to resubmit the billing with proper codes. Some of the bills were submitted properly and my insurance did pay the counseling office but they still have not reimbursed me and won’t tell me why. I guess I will just report them to the better business bureau. If that doesn’t work then I’m just out $300 I guess.

Definitely report them. Then go from there. You need to do what feels healthiest to you. I would tend to fight it, usually. So infuriating!

I disputed all the credit card charges and cancelled all my counseling appointments. I was very polite about it. I think the counseling was helping me but when neither the owner or my counselor would respond to my requests to resolve the billing issue I just didn’t feel comfortable going back. I’m looking for a new counselor, once again. I do not advise leaving a credit card on file for a counseling office to charge as they please. I will never do that again.

Wow. I am so sorry...what a weird situation to have to go through. You have my support, though. I believe you did the right thing by taking care of yourself.

They sound so shady that I would want to change my credit card number and get a new card just so they wouldn't have access to your account. I agree about not leaving a credit card account on file.

I am sorry that you are going through this.
