When a therapist just lets you ramble on and on and then you realize you have been talking for awhile and they have just been stareing at you and not interrupting?

Its a specfic type of psychology skill therapists use and it has a name I can't remember.

Free Association Therapy.

a therapist takes notes while the client just talks about whatever comes to mind.

Signmund freud called it psychoanaylsis.

young adults today call it "venting", ranting.

My therapist will do this sometimes, too. It can be helpful when I just need to get stuff out. Do you find it helps you? Or is it more awkward because they're not saying anything?

I find it kind of confusing. Because it can go on for a couple of minutes and then I realize she hasn't said anything and I feel a bit dumb.

it seems like something for you to talk about then. Does she literally not say anything, like, "oh" or "hm" or "ugh"? Or nodding or something? As then I definitely understand how it would feel awkward. Maybe if you told her you'd rather her say something, it could help.

I had that - active listening - for 20yrs...hard to deal with in the begining.. I discovered she was really listening... I finished theraoy 4yrs ago and realised no one will ever listen to me like that again. In civvy street no ones got that ability to really listen... What a gift those sessions were
