WOW. I have been completely vindicated and validated at work.

So a year ago, my boss fought me on a huge issue. I had advised that the site's rankings would be ruined, and therefore, traffic and revenue, if she pursued this one tactic she wanted to pursue.

Well, she took me off that project eventually and implemented this tactic against my guidance and expert written articles I had provided supporting my argument. And guess what happened? The site has completely tanked! I had it ranking at over 50 page 1 rankings (of those I tracked), and now it only has 17! It no longer ranks AT ALL for any of the major terms that brought in a lot of traffic and revenue.

So I was right!!! I feel good in knowing I was right all along. I lack confidence at work sometimes, and this bolsters my confidence that I really do know what I am talking about.

Hooray!!!!

I know exactly how you feel. It feels good to be vindicated, I know.

So on top of this, in this same job, I've today learned that our new marketing director, who took most of my job away and gave it to an outside consultant, is also going against my guidance on a specific tactic that will also negatively impact rankings and traffic. He asked me about this tactic and wanted to implement it. I said NOT a good idea and here is why. I provided expert articles, then learned that he is implementing this tactic anyways. He told me that other experts like myself have told him differently and that it is perfectly fine to do as he is doing.

Well, WTF.... so I've been demoted I think because I didn't say what he wanted, and he wants to do things HIS way and he wants an expert who will agree with his way. So he must have hired a so-called "expert" who backed up his own opinions, which was not me.

So now I am just going to sit back and let them ruin the site's traffic and rankings. Then he'll think twice about having put me on this lowly project only.

You hit the nail on the head. This happens to consultants all the time. All you can do is advice (I know you're part-time but it seems you sort of function more like a consultant than staff) and let them make their final decision. He has an idea, and wants someone to confirm his idea, rather than understand the real implications of it. It's his prerogative to employ the idea, but at least you have on the record that you advised differently.

You said this guy was new, it sounds like he doesn't value your opinion. I wonder, if he ignores your advice because you're a woman? I don't know enough about the situation to say if it's the case or not, but for some reason I get that feeling. I have worked with far too many men who, without even realizing it, disregard advice because it comes from a woman, and, when hearing the same exact advice from a man, all of a sudden see the logic in that advice. Just saying. Gender bias is real. But I digress.

Keep doing a great job at the new gig, and keep looking for full-time or another job to replace this one. Sounds like you need to call it quits with them anyhow. They aren't listening to you or using you to the fullest extent of your abilities. Why would you want to stick around for that?

It could be because I'm a woman. But I even presented articles backing up my claim.

I think he's an idiot. Clearly, he's just listening to someone else without looking into it himself.

I don't advise anymore in that role at all except for one measly project, which is actually a critically important project.

I DO need to leave this job, but I am SO burnt out on interviewing and am looking for a place to live, so I can't really do both easily. Plus, I've now started a new professional course which will take up time too. It will have to be put on the backburner for now... while I watch them ruin their website's traffic and rankings.

Yeah, you can slow down your search for sure. Focus on other things, but I would cut out like an hour a week to send out resumes so you don't miss out on good openings. But yeah, I get it, other things that are more pressing right now.

Yeah, exactly. I am just super pissed that they not only demoted me, but now they're listening to BAD guidance. And I'm no longer involved in strategy for that one site so I cannot say anything.

Did you actually get a demotion in title and pay, or is it just that they’re having you do work with lesser responsibilities?

No pay or title change. They outsourced most of my job to a consultant and gave me a lower level project to work on. That's why I consider it a demotion in responsibility.
