I'm currently living with my parents.
I suffer from bipolar ii disorder and have had trouble staying in a job for more than 2 years at a time. I'm having trouble with attendance at this job due to a combination of SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) and bipolar symptoms. I want to save up for a down payment for a condo and move but part of me is ready to move now so I'm thinking about renting. I've had a lot of absences and I'm not sure if I'll be able to hold on to this job or not. Does anyone have any suggestions of how long I should be consistent in my job before moving (e.g. a certain number of days, weeks, or months without missing work or being late)? |

Hi, Ylba, and welcome to Psych Central! Are you getting "medical leave" for your absences? What does your current boss say? I think the main thing is getting a good reference. I would think you need to go three months or more without missing work or being late, but that's just a guess. It's what your boss thinks that counts, of course.

I'm recently in the process of getting the medical certifications for FMLA leave which would excuse my former and future absences. Three months sounds like a good goal. I'd still be at the same job, so I wouldn't need a reference. But despite my absences I do a really good job at work and my boss is impressed with my work. I just wish I didn't feel sick so often and could be more consistent with my attendance. I really want to find a project based job. Preferably in an office where I don't have set hours and just have project deadlines to meet. But there's a lot of transition happening at my job and they really need me to be there, even with the absences. Anyway, I like your suggestion of 3 months. |
