I'm wondering when the right moment to give up your job is if you don't want to have the feeling you've been defeated.

Long version:

I've had 4 jobs so far.

1. I left the first one after 4 years.

2. The second one was a mistake from the very beginning. I remember discussing the conditions of my contract with the person that was to turn into my boss thinking "if I sign this, I will turn into an employee of one of the biggest ***holes I've met". But I had no alternatives and needed the money so... I was right, the culture was toxic. It lasted 3 months, then I turned in my notice.

3. My third job was in the area I loved. However, the conditions weren't very good, I worked 10+ h/day for a minimum salary. I decided to leave after 2 years after learning a lot.

4. Now I have a new job and I'm considering quitting for several reasons.

The first one is my boss. He needs much more control over me than what I'm used to. He just seems to hate me. He's very distrustful towards me, puts everything what I say into question, frequently in front of other people. I'm in a quite senior position.

The second reason is my team colleagues. There's a lot of undermining each other, hostile attitude I've experienced from the beginning of my employment here. I think it has to do with the fact that I'm educated to a higher level than them. Although I've never attached any importance to that. The opposite is true, I've always been humble and accommodating. But the atmosphere makes me hate going to the office. I hate every second of being there.

The third reason is the general management in the unit. Lack of clear responsibilities, lack of effective structures. A bullying atmosphere. This impacts on my opportunities to succeed in my job dramatically. For example, I don't think I will be able to succeed in my - officially - main project, since I'm given plenty of other tasks, which in theory don't belong to my position at all, but which take up 90% of my work time. I've tried dealing with that my proposing different solutions to my boss, but she's turned down everything. As a result, it's improbable that I will be able to succeed here unless I'm prepared to work 16 h/day, something which I'm not prepared to do given my current salary.

I now have another, better paid, job offer. At the same time I have the feeling that I might be giving up too soon, that I'll lose if I turn in my notice now. But does it make sense in a job you hate and you can't succeed in only to avoid the feeling you're a loser?

What do you think?
