So, I calculated that i have until mid-May before my Unemployment Insurance benefits run out.

And, timing what it is, I asked my roommate in front of her ex-husband and two best friends who are over right now, if she'd consider letting me continue to rent out her guest bedroom until May 1st. That would give me time to find a full-time job at least, and not worry about finding another roommate situation or worse, a homeless shelter/sleep in my SUV.

I'm grateful that I connected with a career counselor in the Dislocated Workers Program. She's a fountain of information and we set up weekly meetings for me to visit her in person once a week while i continue to job-junt.

This life transition is hard. I have posted multiple threads about it already, too. But, today, I am happy at least, that I have accessed a career counselor, free classes at the CareerForce Centers focused on job-search and resume writing and interviewing because it gives me some structure to motivate me to keep going.

I don't qualify for food stamps or emergency assistance, so I essentially live week to week on my UI benefits. My auto insurance canceled but I managed to find another auto insurance carrier to sign on with. It will be a high premium but I'll just use my UI benefits. I could turn my license plates in and take the bus instead of getting new auto insurance, but that's a no deal for me.

I know others are in my position, living week to week, sometimes wondering if they will get their food from the food shelter (I have done so already and just stick to canned goods b/c the produce is dicey).

Being unemployed is hard when you are single with no other financial means of support. But, if my roommate is open to letting me stay through the winter until May 1st, well that's one less worry on my plate.

I am going to attend a 3 hour CareerForce workshop on how to set up a consulting business. I want to freelance write again, and do freelance virtual assistance. So, this will really help me. I hope it will.

I'm so glad things are looking good for you. I didn't know there were career counselors and things like free classes. Thanks for sharing. Good luck with the job search!

Hi @MrsA yes. If you join a Dislocated Workers program through Goodwill Easter Seals or through your county, you get access to a career counselor who will help you find a job and provide you with access to take certification classes (i.e. grant money used to pay for whatever classes you want to take -- if you want to become a medical assistant, they pay for your tuition that you don't have to repay).

Also, I don't know what they are called in every state, but in MN they are called CareerForce Centers. They are county funded centers that help people in transition in life and offer a ton of free classes, access to computers and even career counselors who are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

If i didn't have these resources, and I was stuck job searching at home, I don't think I will be as successful. It's nice knowing I have to be accountable to a career counselor now. And, if i have any doubts, or questions, or need information related to my job search, now I have access to a career counselor who can help me. I did contact my college alumni association to be connected to my graduating class of '92 but that's not always reliable. It's just another resource. I went to the career counseling center of my former university and asked them to add my name to their list. I am also looking on LinkedIn for old classmates. I'm literally not leaving any stone unturned at this point anymore. I can't.

Thanks! I didn't know programs like that existed. Right now my work situation is a little better, but I need a backup plan. I'm so glad you are taking control of your life.
