I don’t appreciate this comment. That’s a very negative and unsupportive statement and It couldn’t be farther from the truth. I’m very happy to be marrying him, and I’ve already explained why it bothered me.

Exactly! We are both still talking about it, three days later. It was shocking.

True. I don’t have marital issue (besides some normal occasional disagreements that people might have) and I don’t tolerate negative comments about my marriage.

Thank you, Divine. I also never stated that I have doubts. No one needs to conjecture or read negatively into things.

What’s so hard to understand? My friend was very rude to me.
Thanks for the detailed explanation and insight. I'm sorry she was rude. I really hope that the negativity doesn't derail your happy!

Remember to focus on you two and the lives that you are building together!

Have you brought it up to your friend that she really hurt your feelings?

Also, I was just thinking about how this drunken response may have been rooted in your friend's significant jealousy and anxiety in her own relationships or lack thereof.

Could this be a possibility?

Thank you! I greatly appreciate your kind reply.

Yes, I brought it up to her, she apologized, but made poor excuses for herself and I saw right through her.

Another friend told me she had said something similarly hurtful to her recently as well. This woman must be unhappy, is what I have concluded. And she's trying to spread her own unhappiness onto me and my fiance's wedding.

She's a wet blanket!!!

I have let it go though. I have better perspective on it now, I see that her comment does not influence my own happiness level whatsoever, and I am going on my merry little way, happy to be married soon to the greatest love of my life.

Yes. I think there’s a distinct possibility. Why else say something so negative?

That's what I was going to say. Even if GE is feeling some doubts, it was still an incredibly rude statement from a friend. Besides don't like 98% of people getting ready to get married have some slight doubts at least? Like "am I making the right decision?" is probably a normal question brides/grooms ask themselves.

Whether or not she's feeling any insecurity about the relationship, to me, is entirely separate from this statement being incredibly rude and insensitive and just inappropriate. I mean, "I hope it works out" to me seems to insinuate that you think it won't. A real friend would say "I wish you every happiness" even if they were concerned, rather than a statement that sort of passively aggressively hints at their pessimistic view of the relationship. "I wish you every happiness" means you wish the relationship success, without hinting that you personally feel it's good or bad.

This could just be a matter of a friend having no clue how she sounds or what words are coming out of her mouth, but I'm glad you stood up for yourself and pointed out to her that you felt hurt by the statement.

Thanks Seesaw! It was SO rude. I am still floored. I think she was projecting her own negativity onto us. I think she’s struggling quite a bit and her own relationship may have issues. She may have been married before and perhaps it went south for all I know. Or perhaps she’s envious of our love. She sees us out all the time, happy, holding hands and looking adoringly at each other. She may wish the same for herself. I think her boyfriend may be a drunk, not sure. Or maybe like you said, she has no clue how she sounds. Whatever the case may be, it was definitely passive aggressive and she should have wished us happiness, not put a wet blanket over our upcoming wedding. She just moved herself into a “no friend of mine” zone for me. I’m keeping my distance. I am glad I said something and let her know how awful that was to say.
