Blood is thicker than water.
We have probably all heard this expression. The implication being that family (literally blood OR the family that raised you) is more important than and comes before anyone else. Do you agree or disagree? Now for myself I completely disagree. My family has never been there for me when I needed them. Their typical behavior is showing up when they want something. I have one family member who is particularly toxic for me. He totes the above all the time, when he isnt making judgmental statements and telling me how to live my life. Keeping in mind that even though he is a closer relative blood wise, I do not feel connected to him at all. My FAMILY are my closest friends. The people I can call to share happy news, in crisis or just to say hi. The ones who support me through my ups and downs. The people who give as much as they take, in balance. Blood or name means zero to me. It is about who you are and our relationship. What about you? __________________ "There is no great genius without some touch of madness." |

I think it's generally true simply due to the fact that familial relations are, for most people, the longest we'll ever know. On top of that, social norms strongly encourage the formation of and loyalty to the family unit in various ways. Unsurprisingly, the strongest bonds are often between family members. For most people. But that doesn't mean the bond is unbreakable, particularly when family members are abusing the idea of "family loyalty" for their own gain. In doing so, they corrupt the very notion of "loyalty to one's family." |

Blood “family” have been very abusive and abandoning of me. I don’t have the normal bonds with “family”
I agree that family is about who you are and our relationship. Thanks for this question __________________ |

I am afraid that the play on words here made me smile. The actual abuse and damage is no laughing matter; however, a picture is worth a thousand words even if it is a little gross..... |

Family is not our blood relations. Family is that tight circle of supportive people in our lives.
There are relatives - some very close including my brother and mother - who definitely are not my family. Some of this goes back to extended family just plain not being available in my childhood. I grew up calling close family friends Aunt and Uncle. As I have grown I have come to consider a few people in my life my sisters. And there have been extended family members that have taken on the role that my direct circle ought to have been. For instance, It wasn't until I was a young adult that I met my father's half brother who lived halfway around the world. I came to think of him as a grandfather to myself and my children. I had a far better and closer relationship with him than I ever did with my actual grandparents. In University I lived two years with an aunt and uncle. I came to think of them as parents - especially my aunt for she where my own mother was abusive and neglectful my Aunt was probably the kindest and most nurturing person in my life. When I think of mother she is the woman who comes to mind. She supported me and shaped me into the person I am today. I absolutely do not think family as blood relations. My true kinship far exceeds that. There are those I would go to the moon and back for while there are people I am related to I would not lift a hand for. |
