My sister is in an abusive relationship. I don't want to be near her abuser. If I stay away from family get-togethers will this just make things worse for her?

Excellent question. I'm in the same boat with a few friends.

As for your sister, I couldn't say whether your being around would make it worse for her or not. It would depend on a number of different factors. Do they know that you know about the abuse? Does her abuser greatly dislike you, and would he take it out on her? Would you be able to talk with her alone if you went to the family function?
