My manager is taking sabbatical leave so I've been promoted to his position until he returns in a year.

I've been working really hard in my job and senior management know I want to progress within the company so this is a great opportunity for me.

I told my mum and the first thing she said was I'm guessing they didn't have anyone else then.

Now I'm thinking is this true? Was I just the pick of a bad bunch it would it be too costly to recruit and train someone new?

I started on a high and now I feel awful about myself as i now start to think they didn't have anyone else

Your mom really shoved her foot in her mouth. I wouldn’t pay too much attention to the opinion of one person.

You say you’ve been working hard and they know that you want to advance. Well then I would go with that thought.

Congratulations !

You told them you want to advance so they made the right choice.

Ahh years ago with my mom, she said some really stupid shyt about my career choices and yes it strung and yes sometimes I doubted myself. But every single time it was steps forward for me job wise.

I’d say try to be a duck and let it roll off. Enjoy your new position.

NEVER share good news with parents. They will ALWAYS criticize you for it. Like, when I got an accident settlement from being hit by a truck, my mom's response to the large amount was, "You should have asked for more."

Do not align your boss' choice of promoting you to your mother's awful, critical comment which was...really nasty. What is wrong with her to say such a thing? Do not connect those two things together. Your mother is just a mean person for saying that to you. Jesus.

Wow! Congrats on your promotion They would never have promoted you unless you ARE a good fit. Of course you are!

Blah blah your mother's comments ... put them in one ear and out the other.

Congrats! As someone who has a wonderful mother who can often say the wrong thing, do your best to not let it affect you. You sound like a hardworking driven person so sounds like they just picked the right person for the job. Her mom isn't with you at work so she has no real way to know how well you are doing so it doesnt really matter what she thinks about it
