Hi. I am interested today in how you spend your time with family. For example, in the evenings, what do you do together except eat dinner? What kind of activities do you do together during the day so things don't get too boring? Just talking, eating, and sometimes watching a movie get a little boring and I am looking for new ideas. (Other than that, we also go for a walk and rarely play a board game.)
I'd be really grateful for ideas, or if you can think of anything. Also feel free to add what you do when you have nothing to do, by yourself. |

It depends what you mean by family. Young children? Teens? Adult kids? No kids? Single parent with kids? Two parents? You are an adult living with other family members? You are a kid? Etc
Knowing exact situation would help to answer your question better. I first was going to suggest free activities with young kids but then I realized I don’t know if that’s what you are asking |

Hi, I meant more like adults together, not kids. For my particular situation I mean 2 adults, I am a young adult with mother. |

I currently live alone. I have an ex-wife I have not spoken to since 2007 and a current "partner" who is taking a break or whatever that even means. 2 kids.
I have no contact with anyone still living in my genetic family, other than my occasional phone call to my elderly dad. I am fine with that. My genetic family sucks, other than my dad. You can have them. My real family are the very few friends that do still care and haven't bailed and the awesome folks at PC. What I have learned over the years is not to try to put a square peg in a round hole. My genetic family discriminated against me and threw me away like last month's trash. So, I made my own family. As I have said before, I would rather have 2 people I can totally count on than ten who suck. But that is just me. Other people may have different feelings. __________________ When I was a kid, my parents moved a lot, but I always found them--Rodney Dangerfield |

Depends on your financial situation and what you can afford. Museums, library, park, shopping, shows and plays, concerts, volunteer together, crafts, cooking etc
Do you both work? |

Thank you for your reply. What kind of crafts do you mean? And if I can ask, what do you do with your husband when you have time off together? Also when you want to do something more structured, for example. She works, I am looking for a job. ^^ |

Next time we are off we are going to see an exhibit in the museum in the city. It’s hard to tell others what to do in free time. Whatever people like to do It’s hard for me to tell you what crafts. It’s depends what you like to do |

Maybe you can ask your mum if there's anything new that she's wanted to try and for whatever reason hasn't been able to.
You could even try to just talk about different topics, or eat food you've never tasted if it's really difficult to find a new activity. As for what I do to try and change my routine once in a while, I search for local events and try to find anything that interests me or my family. But of course, there may not be much to do, depending on where you live. |

I never spent an evening with my family, because of the constant abuse they inflicted on me (it did good to keep away from them)
I remember a time when they would ask me if I wanted to watch a movie with them after dinner, or play scrabble, but it was always a no- and the rest of the family would do it without me. I kkept myself to myself- listen to music, watch tv, use the internet (though back then, internet was very slow. lol) and play with my toys. I've not spoken with my family for years now. probably a good thing.. |

Thanks Divine. That sounds interesting. However nearly every evening we have about 4-5 hours off and the town events here only happen occasionally. You can give me some examples. Maybe I find something I like. I'd like to maybe make something to sell. I don't really draw/paint a lot but I decorate cards when necessary, collect stickers and pictures, maybe play an instrument occasionally. I just don't want to spend all the time together with her sitting in front of a computer, and me browsing on my cellphone, you know? >_< It gets really boring. I just want more ideas on what interesting things to do together. Otherwise do you maybe know of a good forum/site I could ask? |

Do you really need to spend that much time with your mother? Even in the most wonderful close families adult kids and their parents don’t really spend every week day together. Maybe weekend? Should you two have a bit of your own lives? I love my daughter dearly but if she wanted to hang out and socialize every evening after work I’d go nuts. It’s a bit unusual.

Maybe you can cut some of the time you spend with your mother, and find new hobbies and interests for yourself? Since perhaps your mother is content with how your time with each other is currently spent, and may not be interested in finding new things to try out? Of course, I don't know your mum so I may be wrong. But it's also no guarantee that both of you would enjoy the new activities you will try out. If it so happens you end up enjoying some more than your mother, then you've found hobbies for yourself.
As for things that you could try that don't require much financially. Maybe you can cook new recipes with your mum? Or she can teach you to cook things that you don't know how to cook? Expanding your physical activity together beyond walking maybe? it doesn't have to be anything too exerting. There's quite a few light exercises that you could find by just a google search. Or it could just be a hike, jog or swim. Usually, whenever I go walking I make an effort to find a place to walk where I haven't been before. Another idea is, what does she do in her own time she doesn't with you and vice versa? If it's anything that can be done with more than one person, perhaps you can introduce each other to your individual hobbies and interests. all i've got for now |
