Also known as Depramil in some countries.

What is Celexa?

Celexa is in a class of medicines called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

Celexa tablets and oral solution are used to treat depression. It may also be used to treat other conditions, as prescribed by your doctor.

Who Should Not Take Celexa?

Never take Celexa if you are taking another drug used to treat depression, called a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI), or if you have stopped taking an MAOI in the last 14 days. Taking Celexa close in time to an MAOI can result in serious, sometimes fatal, reactions, including:

  • High body temperature
  • Coma
  • Seizures (convulsions)

MAOI drugs include Nardil (phenelzine sulfate), Parnate (tranylcypromine sulfate), Marplan (isocarboxazid), and other brands.

Common Side Effects

The most commonly experienced side effects include: insomnia, somnolence and/or nausea. Additional side effects you may experience include dry mouth, vomiting, dizziness, agitation and asthenia.

What Are The Risks?

The following are the major potential risks and side effects of Celexa therapy. However, this list is not complete.

  • Possible life-threatening serotonin syndrome when used with triptan medicines: See FDA Alert [07/2006] above.

  • Infant persistent pulmonary hypertension: See FDA Alert [07/2006] above.

  • Suicidal thoughts or actions:Persons taking Celexa may be more likely to think about killing themselves or actually try to do so, especially when Celexa is first started or he dose is changed. People close to persons taking Celexa can help by paying attention to changes in user’s moods or actions. Contact your healthcare professional right away if someone using Celexa talks about or shows signs of killing him or herself. If you are taking Celexa yourself and you start thinking about killing yourself, tell your healthcare professional about this side effect right away.

  • Stopping Celexa: Do not stop taking Celexa suddenly because you could get side effects. Your healthcare professional will slowly decrease your dose.

  • Bleeding problems: Celexa may cause bleeding problems, especially if taken with aspirin, NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen), or other drugs that affect bleeding.

  • Mania: You may become unusually hyperactive, excitable or elated.

  • Seizures: You may experience a seizure (convulsion), even if you are not taking Celexa close in time with an MAOI.

  • Pregnancy: Tell your healthcare professional if you are or may be pregnant (see FDA Alert [07/2006] above). In addition to the issue described in the alert, babies delivered to mothers taking Celexa late in pregnancy have developed problems, such as difficulty breathing and feeding.

  • Sexual problems: You may have problems with impotence (erectile dysfunction), abnormal ejaculation, difficulty reaching orgasm, or decreased libido (sexual desire).

  • Other side effects include dry mouth, nausea, and sleepiness.

  • Tell your healthcare professional about all your medical conditions, especially liver or kidney disease. Tell your healthcare professional if you are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed your baby.

Are There Any Interactions With Drugs or Foods?

  • Do not take Celexa with Lexapro (escitalopram), another drug used to treat depression, because they are very similar and you could get an overdose.

  • Celexa may interact with medicines other than the ones already mentioned in this information sheet. These interactions can cause serious side effects. Tell your healthcare professional about all medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements you take.

  • If you plan to drink alcohol, talk to your healthcare professional.

How Do I Take Celexa?

Celexa is taken by mouth, with or without food, exactly as prescribed by your healthcare professional.

Special Precautions

Avoid abrupt discontinuation of this medication.

PROS: helped me overcome severe agoraphobia, reduced panic attacks
CONS: feeling of lethargy and inertia, weight gain

I had agoraphobia for over 3 years -- severe panic attacks if I stepped outside my front door. So, I stayed inside and only went out a couple of times per year -- for doctor's appointments. Celexa (20 mg in combination with 0.5 mg Clonazepam per day and CBT) worked very well for me. Within 4 months of treatment, I was working full-time, leaving my house everyday. I credit this with helping me overcome my agoraphobia and living a full life again. I weaned myself off Celexa after about 16 months and did fine without it. The positive effects and confidence I gained while taking it stayed with me. The negative side effects were a feeling of inertia when I was home alone. I felt like I was a wind-up doll and needed someone external to turn the key to get me moving. I had been a neat freak, but while taking Celexa, my flat was a mess. I just couldn't make myself get up and do things. It also impaired my short-term memory. I gained 30 lbs. while taking it, but the weight fell off when I stopped taking Celexa. Overall, the negative side effects were outweighed by the positive effects. I credit Celexa with helping me regain my life.

PROS:
CONS:

I like it myself. Of all the other Anti-Depression Medications I've been on so far I like Celexa. I haven't had any known side effects as I have been on it for a few months now.

PROS: calm
CONS: itchy skin all over

I don't want to give this med a low rating just because it made me itch...my body is very sensitive unlike almost any other...so i will give it a 7 out of 10...by the way my grandmother who is in her late eighties takes this and it has really helped her out!

PROS: No foggy side effects
CONS: Takes awhile to kick in, need high doses

I like that it comes in generic. I was switched to 40 mg of Celexa from 200 mg of Zoloft and the fog lifted. I'm still depressed but symptoms are definitely less. I just upped to 50 mg so I'll come back and let you know if it works better then.

PROS: evens out your mood, gets you motivated, and negative thoughts aren't allowed in
CONS: minor fatigue, medication wears off easily

Great medication, citalopram that is, not celexa.

PROS:
CONS: immediate reaction was to cause migraine pain

This medication was provided as samples & then again given in the hospital, so no information on price. Immediately after being given even a low dose of this med, migraine pain was experienced. Because my migraine pain is being controled using a high dose of narcotics, I wasn't willing to continue taking the celexa when migraine pain showed up after taking the med.

PROS: Increased mood, improved sleep, decreased constant brain activity especially at night
CONS: None, except it eventually quit working for me

I'd been on this medication for years, tweaking the dose when needed - decreasing when feeling better, increasing when going through a rough spell. I thought it worked well for me until my doctor switched me to Lexapro and I saw how much better that worked. Due to cost, I went back to citalopram (generic Celexa) but found that it just didn't work as well after seeing how much better I felt on Lexapro. Due to low side effect profile and low cost, I would definitely recommend this to someone on a tight budget who needs a calming antidepressant. A 90-day supply cost $33, 100% out-of-pocket, at two different pharmacies (a chain store and a locally-owned pharmacy). This med caused no strange tics, sexual side effects, or weight loss/gain.

PROS: I found it did help lift depression for me, when the other SSRI's konked out. Celexa eventually did, so my pdoc encouraged a mood stabilizer that has seemed to address my depression while adressing my mild bipolar. Overall, Celexa did help me get on trac
CONS: Did on occasion, get involutary muscle jerks, that would just happen, for example,a knee or arm jerk, as fast as it occured it would end. Other than that, it was easier with physical withdrawal, I did not have "brain zaps", where Zoloft, physical

Sorry, I couldn't say about price, once again I have a presciprion plan, it has been years since I was on Celexa, so I forgot what it would have cost. Bottom line, if it were prescribed to me again, I'd have no qualms to re-start.

PROS: Increased mental awareness / decreased anxiety / no more running thoughts
CONS: change in sexual function / ability

Celexa has literally saved my life.... I was once a prisoner within the four walls of my house and was thinking about (had a date & plan) to end my life just prior to starting this medicine. I am presently taking 20 mg a day of Celexa for PMDD, Severe Mood Swings, Depression and an Anxiety Disorder. IMO - this medicine is a miracle drug.

PROS: increased focus/decreased anxiety
CONS: none

I was on this medication for a very short time and it allowed me to focus better and relax. Since I've seen this, I'm thinking about speaking to my doctor about it again actually. I had not one side effect on the lowest dose.
