More Information

Antidepressant medications are used to treat a variety of conditions, including depression and other mental/mood disorders. These medications can help prevent suicidal thoughts/attempts and provide other benefits. However, studies have shown that a small number of people (especially children/teenages) who take antidepressants for any condition may experience worsening depression, other mental/mood symptoms, or suicidal thoughts/attempts. Therefore, it is very important to talk with a doctor about the risks and benefits of antidepressant medication, even if the treatment is not for a mental condition. Tell your doctor immediatley if you notice worsening depression, unusual behavior changes, (including possible suicidal thoughts/attempts), or other mental/mood changes. Be especially watchful for these symptoms when a new antidepressant is started or when the dose is changed.

PROS: Reduced OCD intrusive thoughts
CONS: Increased fatigue/tiredness, longer to orgasm

It has reduced suicidal thinking, caused by OCD intrusive thoughts. However does effect sexual function and has resulted in significant amounts of naps during the day.

PROS: Relieved my depression, helped me to sleep
CONS: Weight gain

It was wonderful. One medicine did everything. The only problem was the weight gain. I just kept gaining weight the entire time I was on it.

PROS: Insurance paid for this
CONS: Jaw clenching upset stomach & sexual side effects

This was another drug prescribed by a regular MD-always go to a psychiatrist for psych meds. I told her of the problems with Zoloft and asked for something with less sexual side effects. Paxil was much worse than Zoloft-jaw clenching was almost constant & it's one of the worst AD for sexual side effects. No relief from depressive symptoms.

PROS: OCD was so bad I would was my hands until they would bleed. Thankfully, on Paxil my OCD is virtually non-existent
CONS: Doesn't do much for my depression and it is a total labido killer

I suffered from extreme OCD to the point of washing my hands till they bled at the age of 12. They had tried me on Prozac and Luvox at 11 years of age but nothing seemed to work so I went off. I had to manage my depression and anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder with nothing until I tried Paxil at the age of 20. I'm now 34 and literally have NOT had ANY MODERATE to SEVERE obsessive compulsive thinking. It works great on anxiety as well. It does have some side effects however including an extreme loss of libido which is extremely problematic and depressing and of itself. Also, the drug had an EXTREMELY SHORT half life meaning if you forget to take it for more than 48 hours your going into SEVERE SSSRI withdrawal. I'm talking to the point of crying and electric shocks behind the eyes and even some suicidal thoughts. Despite the side effects, I choose to take the medicine because I would have no quality of life without it. I wish it would have worked on the depression however. Unfortunately while it is great on my OCD and anxiety it does not do much for my depression.

PROS: Helps keep the nightmares at bay
CONS: Still have depressive states

Definitely helps me sleep because it keeps nightmares away, but I've been on it now for a couple years and maybe it's losing its effect or something. also been felling very depressed lately. Makes me just a little tired but not buzzy tired or anything. Don't forget to take it and keep your scripts up to date because withdrawling off these things is crazy...heard noises in my head and it felt like my teeth were vibrating.

PROS: it works
CONS: none

I usually order approved pills through americantrustpills (seriously, this place sucks) free of danger. Unfortunately I use to take lots of it so minimal price is vital for me.

PROS:
CONS:

While I'm here I might as well vent, lol. Weight gain, night sweats, nightmares, lost sex drive. Since decreasing my dose I've lost weight, have a new mattress, nightmares have been replaced by vivid DREAMS and my drive is back, WAY back! Unfortunately, I've isolated myself so, and been so cripplingly depressed that I don't even know how to be my old new self anymore. Thank you PAXIL for hindering any coping mechanisms I might have had, and forcing me into some dunce corner. I feel like Brooks of Shawshank Redemption. I'm finally out of your box, now I've to catch up.

PROS: keeps emotions "within bounds"
CONS: Where did "I" go?

I began this med many years ago after being diagnosed bipolar 2, and trying a slew of others and combos. I have never felt more isolated. It has helped with anxiety, depression (but I think it has just stopped the crying.) I rarely leave the house now, don't socialize or even answer the phone. I have become a different me. If I miss a dose I explode, anger is way worse. I have been weaning down for months, and am now experiencing terrible withdrawl. Side effects while on the med are near none or none at all( unless that explains the diarrhea). I will continue the topamax, has done wonders for my migraines and mood stabilization (and being uninsured, doesn't strain the wallet).

PROS: Daily stress reduced, panic attacks lowered, easily able to stop panic attacks
CONS: Suicidal thoughts increased, depression high, sleep deprived

I often felt very suicidal and never slept. I also was extremely depressed throughout the entire day. I was taken off of it after attempting suicide.

PROS: Decreases Anxiety - Decreases Obsessions & Compulsions
CONS: Time Wearoff - Sleepiness - Weight Gain - High Price - Thirstiness

I've taken it now for about 4 years consecutively. The worst problem of it is that now it has zero effect on me (its effect wears off with time), but I don't know if it also wears off if you take other medications with it or have psychotherapy. 'Cause for the larger part of these 4 years I've been having none. And another real problem is I can't stop it easily now, 'cause each time I try to stop it (even incrementally) I get very bad nausea that makes me stay in bed so I return back to taking it just to stop the nausea! Another really bad thing is that it's very expensive, it literally costs me more than half of my month-spending! It's a wallet squeezer! Another bad thing for Muslims, that it makes it nearly impossible for me to fast (not eat or drink anything from dawn to sunset) in the month of Ramadan, 'cause I get very thirsty, & I need to drink water every hour/couple of hours. One last bad thing is gaining weight. Though it's not very bad, it might be controlled. But generally it's a very good medicine, unless you take it for too long...

PROS: It DID calm my Anxiety
CONS: I was so sick I couldn't get out of bed to ENJOY the break from Anxiety

I was very very sick. Nausea, upset stomach, headaches, diarrhea, etc. I slept all day. Even after I stopped taking it, I was sick like that for another 2 weeks. (I had only been taking it for 3 weeks.)

PROS: Took the edge off of my anxiety
CONS: was in a constant manic state/ constant suicidal ideation/ weight gain/ felt numb inside

I felt like I wasn't real anymore. Almost like the real me was trapped and couldn't get out. I was depressed but I couldn't express it. I was not emotionless but I couldn't express my emotions.

PROS: none
CONS: It caused a suicide episode within a few weeks. I felt drugged out and spacey.

I had a bad experience with suicide as a side effect when I was younger. One of the psyche-wards I was in was giving it to me by accident and I felt totally high the hole time. I talked a lot too.

PROS: completely cured my anxiety
CONS: couldn't feel any emotions, side effects worse than the depression

For the first time in my life, I was not afraid to come out of my house and talk to people. It was glorious. Couldn't feel any emotion, however. Couldn't feel joy, pain, empathy, etc. Nothing. Felt so flat I wondered why I was breathing in the first place. Even taken down to the smallest dose, had NO libido. No matter how much I tried, couldn't finish. Lost interest in all creative endeavors, hobbies and direction in life. Never again.

PROS: It works well for me. Stopped panic attacks and reduced aniexty, helped with depression. Very good in my opinion.
CONS: Makes me yawn, nightmares if I miss a pill. No wieght gain.

Helped me cope with panic attacks, anxiety and depression. Excellent, wish it had been around in my teenage years when my social phobia was crippling. This drug would have made a tremendous difference to me. I tried Prozac first, didn't suit at all and gave me severe diarrhoea. With these meds its all about trial and error what suits one person does not suit another.

PROS: Calmed my anxiety, made me sleep more (during the first few weeks)
CONS: Gained 40lbs, didn't really work for my trouble (except for anxiety), people felt I was ''different'' but not always in a good way

Worked a lot for anxiety but not much for the other parts.

PROS: Worked like a charm, eliminated ALL my symptoms.
CONS: I gained 40 lbs over the course of four years taking it. It also made me sleep a LOT more.

As soon as I started taking it, I started sleeping for 12 hours straight. It has made me more lethargic. I also gained 40 lbs over the course of 4 years while on it, and that weight has been nearly impossible to lose. However, I was told by my doctor that I'd have to adjust my lifestyle, because the meds would only make my anxiety symptoms more manageable and not eliminate them, yet only 10 mg of the stuff took care of every last one. This is a drug where you really need to weigh your pros against your cons.

PROS: Good depression treatment for a few months
CONS: Awful nightmares, night sweats, eventual depressive episode after 6 months

I was really happy with Paxil for awhile, but even when my waking life felt good and stable, I would have nightmares that I had relapsed, broken down, and publicly rejected for my "abnormal" behavior, would wake breathless and covered in sweat, the sheets soaked & freezing in the predawn....unable to shake the horrible ache of pain, shame, and anxiety from my nightmares. My mom read Paxil interferes with insulin regulation and I just read smoking cigs counteracts paxil's antidepressant influence...so I quit cigs and now I face the daunting task of withdrawing from Paxil to try something new...whoopeee

PROS: None
CONS: Several Side Effects

I hated this medication. Paxil was given to me for my OCD and it did absolutely nothing for me. I took it for approximately 3 weeks and I just felt so sick and dizzy and tired all the time. I also encountered brutal headaches with this medication. I was taken off it immediately by my Family Doctor due to the severity of the side effects that I was having. I would not recommend this medication to anyone.

PROS:
CONS:

Paxil is the medication that I've been on the longest. I started taking it when I was 6 years old, but I had to stop taking it when I was 14 years old because the FDA released the warning about anti-depressants causing bad thoughts in teens and young adults. I was prescribed Paxil because I was diagnosed with Social Anxiety at the age of 6. But Paxil (like Celexa) is one of the best medications I've ever taken.

PROS: Helped with anxiety and depression
CONS: Bad withdrawl affects

Generic paxil worked wonders for my generalized anxiety disorder. my panic attack had gotten so bad that i refused or was unable to go to work for several days and lost my job. The side effects sucked but that can be expected with any of these meds. I see many people posting on here how horrible it is or was but for me it was great the only reason i ever stopped was lack of health insurance and financial reasons. The withdrawls were horrible but after being off now for close to a month I am beginning to feel much better and the zaps are finally almost completely gone. I have had some issues with anger and rage and im hoping that in time those feelings will subside. i would say give it a try it worked well for me with minimal side effects def not a horror story here. I see a lot of those on the web and thought itd be nice to see a post that was normal. I had the normal side effects of starting and stopping and it worked very well.

PROS: Helped with depression and anxiety at first
CONS: Loss of concentration, loss of emotion, weight loss, headaches, stomach aches, withdrawal, drowsiness, doesn't work long term

I've been on Paxil CR 25mg for 6 months for anxiety and the depression from bipolar (I take something else for the mania). Anyway for the first two months I had my life back and my social anxiety diminished alot. After that things kind of dropped off. I pretty much lost most of my emotion and I often felt like a zombie. I would sporadically have my highs and low-lows. I pretty much quit caring about anything and everything. I became various disorganized and my home became very messy. I pretty much quit cleaning and organizing things including dishes. Before I was a meticulous neat freak that was constantly cleaning and organizing every little thing. I quit bathing, brushing my teeth, and even putting on deodorant. Very unusual for me. My grades also dropped in school, which is upsetting because I had a 4.0 GPA before. I even had to drop some classes for the first time in my college career. I now have to take a nap everyday because I am so tired. Also, I have been losing track of time! I never did these things even when I was depressed with no medications! My social anxiety has come back fully! I also get brain shocks and migraines if I accidentally miss a dose. I would not recommend this medication to anyone based on my experience. I am trying to get off but it has been hell!

CONS: Inability to experience highs or lows

Effective at first. Then it flatlines your personality. Life begins to be Groundhog day. A re-run. Nor real highs or lows. It seems to swallow your emotions. An unnatural existence. But it did help curb my monstrous panic attacks.

PROS: reduces anxiety somewhat
CONS: doesn't help as much as I thought it would

I started Paxil in August 2009 for my anxiety. First I took 10mg, then 15. My anxiety still is not reduced as much as I'd like it to be. My doctor will probably increase my dose to 20mg, so hopefully I'll see some improvement after that.

PROS: Moderated emotions, decreased anxiety
CONS: Mild nausea, vivid dreams

For me, this drug has been a miracle. I was diagnosed recently with PMDD, and was suffering from horrendous mood swings, terrible social anxiety, paranoia, angry outbursts, crying jags, and everything else under the sun for half my menstrual cycle. The very day after I started on 10mg, I felt completely different. At first, it was a bit like my emotions were blunted, but it was such a relief. That lasted about a week, along with very mild nausea and decreased libido. I had one final day of combined nausea and a funny taste in my mouth, and then it completely evened out. The nausea went away, and my libido returned. Now I feel pleasantly calm, and am able to laugh and cry normally like I remember doing before the PMDD started getting bad. I actually enjoy the vivid dreams, but I can see where someone else might not. I haven't noticed any weight gain, and it doesn't make me crave alcohol, so I've been lucky there. NOTE: I take my dose about an hour before I sleep, which probably helps with any drowsiness it might cause.

PROS: made me tolerant, less angry
CONS: made me numb, apathetic to life, lazy, gained lots of weight

Paxil made me less depressed because I didn't feel anything. No joy, no happiness, no sadness. I felt tired and yawned constantly, sometimes one yawn after another all thru the day. I noticed the constant yawning especially at work where it bothered my coworkers. I gained forty pounds in two months. I was just on the couch after work. It did make me less irritable, but it was impossible to live a full life with this meds. Thumbs down.

PROS: A bit more energy on some days
CONS: Insomnia, increased anxiety, caused full blown manic episode with psychosis

Insomnia, increased anxiety, caused full blown manic episode with psychosis in my case. Good for energy, I guess. Not good for bipolar people.

PROS: helps with small amounts of stress, price
CONS: horrible night sweats, uncontrollable anger, hard to get off of

Horrible night sweats that would soak the entire bed, wild vivid dreams, and the worst of all was that it caused me to snap uncontrollably. It seemed to push my threshold up but once it was reached I exploded! Never had a problem with anger or temper in my life until I started taking it and now believe it has altered my temperment permenantly.

PROS: Exremely effective in treating my depression, helped some with anxiety, makes severe depressive episodes shorter and more manageable
CONS: Sexual side effects, weight gain, drowsiness

This is an extremely effective medication for depression but it also comes with a host of side effects. I gained nearly 40 lbs within 4 months of starting on it, felt quite tired during the day sometimes, and had seriously reduced sexual desires and performance. However, nothing has ever worked so well for depression in my entire life and I am very grateful to have found Paxil--it has truly changed my life. I am now taking Wellbutrin in addition to Paxil in order to manage the side effects.

PROS: Very good for depression
CONS: insomnia

This is a drug that I can't live without, due to my depression & anxiety. I first started paroxetine in 2005 after my Father passed away. It worked so good for me. I was able to go back to school, function again, the lethargy disappeared, I had so much energy I never had before & the crying episodes stopped. I discontinued Paxil 3 months ago just to give my body a rest from it. Everything was fine, the depression did not return, but I became very emotional. I didn't think I would have to return on it until I broke up with my husband. I just filed for divorce & became severly depressed again & just started taking 20 mg Paxil 2 days ago. The cyring episodes aren't as severe & not feeling as depressed. I need to know how long it will be for it to take effect, not the full effect, just in effect?

PROS: price??.... none
CONS: increased alcohol consumption, weight gain, more depressed, mood swings, agitated, severe withdrawals

First!!! Becareful. It increased my consumption of alcohol- I would crave it. My doctor now admitted to me that it can do that. I would black out. I never drank before and now that I am off it- I dont drink. I don't recommend this!! I heard its one of the best of its kind for treatment. But there are other options. I took it for three years. I gained 50 pounds, developed sleep apnea. It did not help with my depression, and caused more mood swings, I was always agitated. My social anxiety increased. Basically it made things worse! Then my mistake was stopping it, "cold-turkey". I went through severe withdrawals. Then I developed severe anxiety along with panic attacks, of which I am now trying to deal with.

PROS: it helped anxiety and panic attacks
CONS: weight gain

I was on this medicine for about six months! I gained around 20 pounds and had horrible nightmares! I asked my doc to switch because of gaining weight! I'm now on setraline 150mg a day! I hope I don't gain weight with this one! I've always been thin so the weight gain didn't help with anxiety!

PROS: None that I can think of
CONS: Coming off of it was hell. Coming off high doses of xanax was easier...ugly and scary

Stay clear, don't let a doc put you on this. Believe me.

PROS: got rid of depression and panic attacks at 25mg
CONS: unfortunately I am bipolar II (although this was not diagnosed at the time) and so the paxil sent me into total angry mania. And when I stopped taking it - that was a whole different pandora's box.

I was actually on the generic form. I knew when I went to the doctor to get treatment for panic attacks that I was possibly bipolar but I am still very young (17) and my mother keeps insisting its only mood swings. So I took the paxil and I was no longer depressed and after they bumped me to 25mg I didnt have any panic attacks anymore. I was experiencing total angry mania 24/7 I even moved out of my house for no apparent reason (in hindsight). I CAN NOT STRESS ENOUGH PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS IF YOU ARE BIPOLAR. It was total hell. My doctor wouldn't listen to me and wanted me to take more so I just stopped taking it instead of tapering off - which was AWFUL. I felt like I was having a bad trip without the visuals. My skins felt like it was crawling and I got the sensation of being pounded by "bad vibes". I couldnt concentrate at all, I would start crying in the middle of class out of frustration, and I had some odd flu-like symptoms (known as "paxil-flu"). All of this lasted about 2 weeks - it was so bad I barely went to any work or school. After the worst subsided I plummeted into a really terrible depression. I hate paxil with a passion and I wouldnt take it again if you paid me a million bucks.

PROS: nothing feels positive about it
CONS: withdrawals are frightening

It was difficult finding this community of Paxil users. I see the last posting was in December but I hope I can encourage more people to write about their experiences. I am in my early 50's and have used other anti-depressants in the past, mostly for PMS. I was prescribed Paxil because I was experiencing depression after two surgeries last year. I decided to stop the medication for the New Year as my life and health seemed to be in balance. Of course, that was until last night. I didn't realize one should wean off of Paxil very slowly, my doctor did not tell me this.... she is a OBGYN. I had been off Paxil for 3 days when I started to feel disoriented at work. Last night I became weepy and anxious. I could not sleep so I took an Ambien. When I woke up and tried to get ready for work, I started to get chills and my body ached. I didn't go to work and slept until noon. When I finally got up, I would start to do things ~ like make coffee ~ and walk away from it unfinished. By 4 this afternoon, I became weepy and felt like I was losing my mind. It was frightening, not to have control over one's thoughts and actions. I couldn't remember what I was doing and the voices of my neighbors talking sounded strange to me. I took a half of a tablet (10 MG) and feel much better. Now I have been scouring the internet and found information about Paxil that scares me. I, too, have surges in my head that feels like mild electric currents. I have had ringing in ears as well. I joined this community tonight because I want to share my experience. Thank you for sharing yours. All of you have given me an insight to the battle I am up against trying to get off Paxil. If I had only known how evil the withdrawals would be, I would have never taken it. Paxil worked well when I needed it during my depression but the withdrawals are not worth it.

CONS: weight gain, vivid nightmares

Did a great job on my anxiety and depression but I gained 25 lbs and had vivid dreams every night. Not worth it to me.

PROS: I actually have used Paxil CR for a long while now. It has deffinently boosted my mood
CONS: I really haven't had any bad side effects. I would like it , if it boosted my mood more

I found that plan ole' paxil speed me up and boosted my mood for about 8 hrs, then I dropped agian. I have found that a low dose of Paxil CR with my mood stabilizers has been beneficial. Consider taking the slow release form, if you have anxiety. I became more anxious during those 8 hrs when I was taking plan ole' paxil
