It was prescribed to add energy in conjunction with the Paxil I was already on. Nothing happened! Totally worthless. I would have gladly taken the increased libido or the long lasting erections.

Several other anti-depressants had created an extreme aversion to trying any other medications. It took the doctor more than a year to overcome all objections in addition to exhaustive research. Having an eating disorder made the potential of weight gain an intolerable side effect and was a major selling point. Though a list of side effects is not indicative of actual experience, it was important. This has made the difference between being a mom who cannot make decisions and get off the couch to becoming an award-winning radio personality, graduating college with honors and being able to resume hobbies.

More energy within a day or two of starting this med

Mostly a positive experience. The only anti-depressants I have taken where I don't gain weight. It makes my sex drive much higher as well, not sure if that is good or bad.

I wish there were another option for recommendation.
I personally had a terrible experience, but it might work great for someone else. The energy boost is great, the weight loss can be great, and it really revved my sex drive.
Anyhow, I was prescribed this when diagnosed with PTSD, which apparently is a bad idea. I struggled to get two hours of sleep each night, snapped at everyone, and didn't care that I was a raging maniac. I impulsively stopped showing up at work, not even bothering to quit. Thing was, I felt great, and wasn't been able to recognize problems until I started having trouble with my heart racing and hurting. And due to a lack of rationality, I stopped cold turkey without consulting a doctor, and suffered blowback.
It's been about ten years, and I'm pretty certain the damage to my personality lasted at least eight years. I might still be altered, because now I'm an anxious person, and I remember being pretty mellow before.

Wellbutrin was the first atypical antidepressant I've tried and I had a truly awful experience on it. The drug increased my depression and anxiety by about 100% and I had a lot of suicidal thoughts while taking it. It also made me extremely irritable, to the point where I was confrontational with complete strangers and almost violent. It also made me drink like a fish because I felt so miserable, thus creating a vicious cycle. I don't recommend this drug at all. It should be called Hellbutrin, not Wellbutrin.

I was wondering if anyone else had these same side effects and if it went away with continued use. It seems like most people who have experienced this have discontinued using it. I've only been on it for about two and a half weeks - I went on it for AD/HD and it seems to be working otherwise. I'm reluctant to try other stimulants such as Ritalin since I have an anxiety disorder to begin with. Is it worth continuing with the Wellbutrin XL if the pain and discomfort will eventually go away? Also, would taking it on an empty stomach maybe make it better (since I have been taking it with my breakfast each morning) ?

I've had anxiety disorder for about 15 years, have gone through alot of different meds for many years and finally settled on Lexapro. My anxiety was finally under control but I was always lethargic and my mood was always flat so my doc recommended adding Budeprion. I immediatly noticed a boost in energy and had trouble falling asleep for the next 3 days but it finally leveled off. Soon I started noticing that my hands would tremble and that I would sweat all the time. Worst of all my sweat would smell like the pills, with my type of work, I sweat alot and ppl around me started noticing that I always smelled funny lol. So I stopped taking it. I've washed my work cloths so many times and still notice the scent of the pills. Gonna ask the doc to prescribe me the real stuff and not the generic to see if it makes a difference

I started out on generic called budeprion sr, at first I was very anxious, it was embarrassing and I was constipated. The whole time I was taking it I had headaches and I would go through major mood swings. I almost started crying at the grocery store because I was so overwhelmed with the people around me. I asked my dr for name brand sr 150 mg because I read some negative things about the generic version. It is like night and day, I feel great. Im goofing around with my kids and laughing, my pms is non existant and I just feel overall a sence of well being I havn't felt in a really long time. No more headaches or meltdowns. My anxiety is under control and I no longer struggle with depression. This drug helps me get my life together. I'm very greatfull.

I've been taking buproprion for almost three months (morning and night). I haven't experienced any insomnia or change in sexual desires. It definitely decreased my anxiety and enabled me to focus on life, not on anxiety. I get dizziness about 20 minutes after I take each does, but it usually lasts only 10 minutes or so.

I would recommend this product because I think it could work very well for the people who need it. It definitely did not work for me. I tried it for about 8 weeks at 200mg, and I kept hoping that I was seeing improvement, but by the 7th week I had to admit that not only was my depression not improving, I was definitely feeling more angry about absolutely nothing, like having near constant PMS. If you truly need this medication, I think you'll see at least some improvement in the first month. If not, you probably need something else.

immediately lifted my depression, lots of energy and enthusiasm, felt just wonderful
|
CONS:
|
insomnia, complete loss of appetite, only felt great for a couple of weeks
|
|
I was suicidal, and started taking Wellbutrin. Two days later, I felt *wonderful*--happy, joyous, huge amounts of energy. Later, I realized I must have been hypomanic. It was great, though!
Wellbutrin caused me to be absolutely unable to sleep, and took away my appetite. I had to force down food and I lost too much weight. Also, after a couple of weeks, I had big mood swings--two great days, followed by two or three days of sobbing--probably because I wasn't sleeping.
The doctor added Zoloft and they're great in combination. I haven't lost my sex drive from Zoloft, which I credit WB with.
If you are already thin, or have insomnia problems, I wouldn't recommend Wellbutrin alone. If you lack energy, want to lose weight, and are lethargic, it might be great for you. Otherwise I think it's better in combination with an SSRI.

I wish I could have stayed on this. It was the ONLY thing I ever tried that actually CUT my food cravings! I mean this stuff really does it. I didn't want sweets! Had I stayed on it, I could have lost the 15 pounds I gained and still have. But I was allergic to it! No joke...I kept breaking out with hives, those long, puffy, mosquito bite looking things all over me, especially on my stomach. And they really itched, bad! When I told my doctor, he really didn't think it was the Welbutrin causing the hives. He thought it was stress. But when I discontinued Welbutrin, the hives and itching stopped completely and have never returned. In additon, this drug made me have extreme shortness of breath like I couldn't get a complete breath of oxygen in my lungs. That was a real trip..but I still wish I could have stayed on it.

This medication has been a godsend for me. It clears up some of the sexual side effects and sedating qualities of SSRIs (I am also on Paxil) and seems to have made me more focused and goal-oriented. However, I do have episodes of increased anxiety and have a history of sleep problems, which have only gotten worse. Overall though, the trade off is very much worth it for me

Taking Wellbutrin was my new year resolution, today is July 9th so I've been taking it for over 7 months, when I first took this drug I noticed some changes, mostly positive,
Positive:
1) I feel that I could sit down and not move for more than 5 minutes, something I could almost never do before; every time I went somewhere I would think about leaving right away, that has all changed :-)
2)I started thinking about sex more, I was setting up dates and being more socially active in the female department,
3)I felt that my mind was less "blurry" that I was more focused, I was doing a lot less ranting and felt more " settled down" and more composed.
4)I would say the drug made me more alert but in a good way, I could say I felt less lazy and more likely to get up and do something or go somewhere
5)I would always pop too many non-prescription pills at the same time ( over 6 sometimes 10 or even 20), I couldn't stop myself from doing that even though I was constantly worried about overdosing or causing irreversible Kidney or liver damage, now I no longer feel like popping any pills, I'm very pleased with that :-)
6)I didn't feel that the drug made me want to eat more, my weight remained the same and that's something I am very happy with
Negative:
1) Dry mouth is annoying at first but then you get used to drinking more liquids
2) its harder to fall asleep at first but i adjusted both doses to be earlier in the day (150mg when I wake up at 7:30, the next dose at 5 or 6pm at the most)
3) I don't feel that I have improved socially, I am still withdrawn and spend most of my time alone, however I feel its not fair not to blame myself more for that
Overall to me the positives out way the Negatives, I have had a good experience with the drug :-)

Unfortunately, people with poor experiences are more prone to post here, so the outlook for this medication is probably much better than it appears. I understand how the side effects can be overwhelming- especially in the first few days. I had a short temper, insomnia and I still get headaches. Once my body adjusted to the 300 mg/day (after first being gradually elevated to that level for a week) I felt much better. Having taken Wellbutrin XL for a few months, however, I still didn't feel 100%. I was recently increased to 450 mg/day. It was a struggle to get used to again, but I feel I am now benefiting from it.
I'm lucky, it's hard to diagnose which treatment is best for which person and I am grateful I didn't have to go through a spectrum of drugs before I found the right one.
There are definitely some bad things about bupropion medications, but overall the positives have outweighed the negatives substantially. If you want to quit smoking, then taking this for depression is an added bonus and I haven't smoked in the 6 months I have been taking it. Caution: alcohol WILL NOT be enjoyable with Wellbutrin. It lowers your seizure threshold and it made me immensely paranoid and fearful. My main concern is the fact that my psychiatrist wants to keep me on it for another year. Isn't that a little too long?

I suffer from a major depressive disorder and anxiety. My psych perscribed wellbutrin in order to "motivate" me, hoping that it would take away my lethargy and depression. I have to say that this is the worst med that I have been on. It made me extremely depressed and emotional. It also increased my anxiety ten fold. I am also a smoker, but I didn't find it at all usefull for qitting.

It helps my depression, but I am still a bit dysphoric and depressed. It did give me the energy to make it through the day, but I have to keep a pill bottle next to my bed because it's too hard to get up until it's in my system. It allows me to function. It does occasionally make me hyper, but that's not terribly abnormal. I was addicted to caffeine before I started Bupropion because I could not function without it. I stopped taking caffeine cold turkey once I started. It was unnecessary. Plus, Bupropion gave me a more stable boost. (No caffeine withdrawls at 4 pm)
As for the depression, it does help. It's certainly not an end-all cure.

This is a good one for me, but after now being on it for about 8 months and being on 300mg a day, I feel like I am slipping back steadily into a major depression. I take this in conjunction with lexapro and I don't feel like things are working so well any longer. Also, this is EXTREMELY expensive. A month's worth costs about $130 for me and that's way too much for me to afford. I'm running out of samples and may have to quit just because of the cost.

libido back better than ever, energy up, motivated to DO THINGS!

CONS:
|
more or less constant anxiety

I've been on SSRIs (Zoloft) that deprived me of any spectrum of emotion. Sure, I was feeling better, but that was it. Like being on botox for the soul. This, however, allows me ups and downs, and best of all, allows me to feel sexual. My last relationship of 18 months petered out because my libido was so dampened on Zoloft. Too late, I switched to Wellbutrin and am now very disappointed about being single! Which is a drastic change to my "not irritated with you but still don't want to have sex" attitude on Zoloft. On the other hand, I wake up anxious. I've done more crafty, creative things in the last 3 months on Wellbutrin than in the last 3 years. Started volunteering. Working better and harder at all aspects of life. Reconnecting with friends. In the spectrum of side-effects, I'd rather trade in my former miserable apathy for my current constant low-level anxiety if it means that I want sex and am experiencing creative productivity!!!! All said, this has freed me from a decade or more of self-castigation and misery, and heightened my awareness of my own body. Hallelujah and amen!

Shakes, weird sex stuff?
|

I'm so glad this is in generic now...I take it together with Lexapro and it helps a lot with motivation--I actually wake up in the morning and feel like I want to get out of bed and do things. However, it also seems to contribute to monthly anxiety attacks. Also, when I started taking it, it caused a serious increase in my interest in sex (like from wanting it twice a week to wanting it more than once a day) but that seems to have leveled off. (Plus, now it's winter, and the SAD ensures that I would rather read a book than get it on...)

I started feeling a little better

I had a very serious side effect. I had some form of a seziure disorder, which mimiced parkinsons. I ended up in the hospital. It took a full week for the symptoms to subside

My brother has done really well on welbutrin. He and I both have bi-polar II. I think it could have helped me had I not had the "rare, but serious side effect."

I never took it long enough to notice any change in mental status
|
CONS:
|
I had symptoms of the (not very well documented) "brain zaps" or "brain shocks"
|
|
I tried taking this medicine because Zoloft was giving me the old sexual side effects bit.
So I tapered off the Zoloft and gradually worked to a regular starter dose of Bupropion.
It didn't take long for me to feel like my brain was shorting out. I literally felt like electrical impulses were cross-firing to the wrong nerves and sending pulses down my neck arms and even all the way down to my feet. After about two weeks of feeling like a spark plug I was taken off this drug and put on Paxil.

HELP! i know exactly what is wrong with me. i have ADD. i have every single symptom of it. i hadn't seen a doctor since 2001 (i haven't had insurance, but i've finally decided to pay out of pocket because i can't keep living like this). i was on effexor for a year because i was depressed/struggling with an eating disorder. i'm done with my adolescent body image troubles, and i now realize that my blues just stems directly from my inability to succeed in work/school/relationships/life. i have a textbook case of ADD. throughout my childhood to now, i have exhibited all symptoms of it... i finally went to a psychiatrist for the first time in years the other day and he put me on wellbutrin. it's not working. nothing. i've taken my roommates adderall a few times and it's like night and day. i love the person i am on adderall. i don't drink/do drugs, and i didn't want to suggest to the doctor that he put me on adderall because i know it is abused my a lot of people, but i truly believe that this is what i need. i feel utterly helpless. i did not mention to him that i had tried adderall and it made me feel normal for the first time in my life, but what is he going to do when i tell him the wellbutrin doesn't work? effexor didn't work, wellbutrin doesn't work... im paying a lot of money to see this douchebag. is it hard to get a doctor to prescribe adderall? thought? opinions? feelings?

for depression have before tried lexapro, zoloft, effexor, & paxil. all had a slew of side effects and none seemed to lighten my depression. 300mg wellbutrin seems to work for me and i wish i had tried this med first

Feeling happier, loss of appetite
|
CONS:
|
Dry mouth, insomnia, and tremor
|
|
I have only been on 150mg Wellbutrin for 5 days now but it's mostly so far so good. The dry mouth and insomina really suck but not so unbearable that I am not willing to stick out the couple of weeks until they subside. I have a very strange taste in my mouth and hand tremors as well, but again they really aren't that bad.
In these few days I really have been feeling a lot happier. Im not really sure if its more of a placebo effect at the moment because I was really optimistic about taking this drug and I don't think change normally happens this quick.
Another plus side effect is the decreased appetite and loss of interest in food. I am not overweight but was slightly obsessed with food and my eating habits prior to taking this medication.

sent my anxiety through the roof
|
|
My doc prescribed Wellbutrin in combination with Ritalin. DUH I have anxiety, ADD(?), and post tramatic stress issues. Needless to say this did not work. Sent me into a manic type anxiety episode after he told me to dicontinue meds cold turkey. Last pdoc for me. Have been using family doc since. I give it a 2 because I do not know which was the most damaging: combination or pdoc's cold turkey suggestion.

tolerable side effects, minus the racing heart

I tolerated this drug well until my heart started racing one night while I was watching TV. I guess that side effect is pretty rare, but you have to stop taking the drug if you experience your heart race. I would recommend it because I know my side effect was rare and, like I said, I tolerated it well up until that point.

Unfortunately I didn't have a good experience with this drug. I had transitioned off Paxil six months prior to starting wb xl. I wanted to give life a shot without drugs for a while. I started having trouble with anxiety/depression and Dr. suggested I try WB. Started at 150mg (name brand-xl) for two weeks and things were tolerable. At 300mg (generic-xl) for next two-three weeks, I started to have bad gut pain and diarrhea. No anger or aggression problems as other have experienced though. No libido impact but neither anxiety nor depression were getting better. Between the side effects and the fact that anxiety/depression was getting out of hand, I decided to stop the WB. I was disappointed as the med got good reviews here but everyone's system is different. I've always had bad anxiety and others have mentioned WB can exacerbate that so it was probably not the best choice. Paxil seems to work better for me.

I just started taking this med recently. Hopefully it will do much better than the Lexapro they had me on last time. I'll revisit this review if things change.

Perks you up, weight loss, libido, some lifting of mood

CONS:

A rough start -- irritable, strange dreams, dry mouth and headache

Overall, I had a good experience with this drug, though I am beginning to think it has run its course with me (don't you just HATE that? A great drug just stops working!!!). Was definitely at 3-4 week adjustment period that you have to work through -- yes, as the others have said, this strange aggressive feeling. I wanted to rip heads off! And the dreams were freaky. Oh, and dry mouth and sweating (if you are a sissy about working through initial side effects, move on). Then it settled in and was real nice -- nicely horny a lot, and sex was good -- and without even trying I dropped from 213 to about 192. VERY nice -- that alone will lift your mood. Fitting into those fave jeans from 5 years back... anywho. Worth a try -- be brave, give it at least 4 weeks, it may indeed be THE ONE. There are many SSRIs, there is only one Wellbutrin.

I have been in a funk for the last six months and didn't realize it. I was content to sit in front of the tv and watch commercials (I have ADD too). No motivation to do any of the honey-do's my wife was desperately asking me to complete. It got pretty bad when, after a another sleepless night of dark ruminating, I really started thinking about suicide. After some serious urging from a couple of good friends, not to mention my wife, I sought professional help.
After just a couple of days taking it, I was becoming a new energized happier person (like my old self). My mental fog cleared; thinking became more clearer and more focused. Unfortunately, my new pdoc switched me out for effexor, (the jury is still out on its effectiveness) as she said it would interact with concerta.
uhm... I did notice the sweating as well, but it also helped with IBS (so that's a wash)

sweating like crazy (sensitive to heat)

I was feeling so bad when I started on Wellbutrin XL that I didn't really care what side effects it had. Now that I'm feeling better, I'm debating whether to stay on it due to the sweating, which I just started to notice. I hate to sweat. While standing in the checkout line at a store I had to leave because I suddenly felt like I was being roasted over hot coals and sweat started to pour off of me. By the time I got in the car, my hair was wet. While doing light housework today I sweat right through my tee shirt. All I want to do is stand in front of the AC or open freezer. With summer coming, I don't think I can handle this. I have a whole new respect for menopausal women suffering from hot flashes!

PROS:

Weight loss, sexual desire back, no heavy sweating,

CONS:

Severe diarrhea, some anxiety and agitation
|
|
I switched to Wellbutrin from Cymbalta because the Cymbalta was giving me severe night sweats and heavy overall sweating. I must say, after starting on the Wellbutrin, I feel like I have more energy than I ever did on other drugs. My appetite has decreased (which is good - I have gained 100 lbs. over a 5 year period on other meds). I also have motivation back to accomplish things. Sexual desire is also back.
Negative - some anxiety/agitation - losing my temper over small stuff. The worst - it gives me severe diarrhea. I had hoped I had a virus or something, but it's been two weeks now. My doc and I decided that the benefits of the med were worth seeing if that side effect would go away, but it hasn't.
Looks like I'll have to go back to the others, which make me zombie-like.
