More Information

Antidepressant medications are used to treat a variety of conditions, including depression and other mental/mood disorders. These medications can help prevent suicidal thoughts/attempts and provide other benefits. However, studies have shown that a small number of people (especially children/teenages) who take antidepressants for any condition may experience worsening depression, other mental/mood symptoms, or suicidal thoughts/attempts. Therefore, it is very important to talk with a doctor about the risks and benefits of antidepressant medication, even if the treatment is not for a mental condition. Tell your doctor immediatley if you notice worsening depression, unusual behavior changes, (including possible suicidal thoughts/attempts), or other mental/mood changes. Be especially watchful for these symptoms when a new antidepressant is started or when the dose is changed.

PROS: It works with minimal side effects
CONS: Causes dry eyes

I love Zoloft. But I must tell you to be aware that the medication can make it hard to grieve (At a funeral). Don't worry about it.

PROS: definitely helped level out my mood swings
CONS: had zero sex drive

I really like it, but my doctor suggested I pair it with bupropion in order to minimize the side affect of low libido.

PROS: Works very well, little to no side effects
CONS: Affects your libido, side effects such as drowsiness & headaches

I take 150mgs of Zoloft coupled with Wellbutrin XL and adding Zoloft to my treatment for depression was the best decision I ever made. I have had very good experiences such as no side effects unless I'm changing my dose and those side effects are headaches and sometimes drowsiness.

PROS: No side effects, no withdrawal effects coming off of it
CONS: Did not relieve anxiety and depression symptoms

Although this medication didn’t work for me, I do know many people it has worked for. I feel that it really all depends on the person and how they metabolize different medications. This was the first antidepressant I was put on and after months of seeing if it was working I realized it just wasn’t. I, myself, haven’t and much luck with the SSRIs. I have tried two SSRIs, Zoloft and celexa, and now I am on my third SSRI, fluoxetine. I only decided to try another SSRI because I have already tried two SNRIs, cymbalta and Effexor, and one mood stabilizer, lamictal, and have had adverse side effects associated with all of them. The only reason I’m leaning more towards trying fluoxetine is because the SSRIs have reacted well with my body in the past and hadn’t really had any side effects. I feel that for the right person, Zoloft can work and it is a good medication in general due to it not having many adverse side effects.

PROS: makes me calmer, makes my anxiety and panic more bearable, manageable/minimal side effects, helps tremendously
CONS: a bit pricey without insurance

Zoloft has helped me so much throughout my life. I've been taking them for generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder since I was 11 (now 20). I started on 12.5mg I think; given I was 11, we slowly increased to 25mg... 50mg... 75mg... I now take 100mg and have for almost 4 years now, and it helps so much. Along with either a professional therapist and/or self-therapy, it works great. Everyone responds differently, but my case is a good one. You may not feel it for around a month or two, and you may even feel a bit worse for a few weeks, but you've just go to try to tough it out. It takes a little bit to fully get into your system, and worsened symptoms of your condition are a side-effect, but you've just go to try to remind yourself that it's just the rain before the rainbow. For me, it has helped me live my life happier and less anxious for 9 years now. I highly recommend it to anyone who is planning on trying SSRI's.

PROS: depression ended, low cost
CONS: weight gain, some difficulty sleeping

I have stopped feeling sad all the time for no reason. I have considered switching to another med in hopes of finding one that doesn't cause weight gain for me, but even if I do, I'm glad to know this one is an option.

PROS:
CONS: side effects, increased suicidal ideation

My experience with Zoloft was awful. The medication did not help with my anxiety or depression even when my dose was increased. Eventually, I found myself hating the meds so much that I overdosed on them and found myself in the ER. The overdose had the same side effects the meds had on me the entire time I was taking them, just slightly intensified - naussa, difficulty sleeping, constant headaches, loss of appetite all together to the point of not eating anything. Overall - Too many side effects and not enough positive results.

PROS: affordable
CONS: I had very bad jaw clenching & sexual side effects from zoloft & no relief from deppressive symptoms

Prior to seeing a psychiatrist my MD prescribed this for my depression. It did not work at all for me & the jaw clenching was terrible-I crunched out 2 fillings in my back molars. The sexual side effects were also bad-no desire & inability to orgasm.

PROS: Helps reduce depressive episodes, urges to SI
CONS: Headches, drowiness sometimes

Helped with my post partum, safe to take while nursing/breastfeeding. Not as depressed depressive moods don't last for weeks like they used to.

PROS: helps the depression, helps with anxiety
CONS: makes you drowsy

I took this medication for 9 years. It definitely helped combat my depression. The only drawback to Zoloft is that it can make you drowsy.

PROS: somewhat alleviated depression
CONS: greatly increased anxiety to the point my doctor thought I was on illegal drugs

I had to stop taking this medication because it greatly increased my anxiety to the point of nearly creating mania. I had bad enough arrhythmia problems that I had to see a doctor about tapering off. The doctor actually thought I was on Meth or Crack. If this med did me any good, I was too strung up with anxiety and mania to notice it.

PROS: Inexpensive, easy on the body
CONS: Loss of sex drive

I have been on Zoloft for nearly 10 years. I started off at 25mg. It works wonderfully, but as time went on, I had to increase my dose. I am now taking 100mg daily. I rely on this medication to get me through my day to day life, and it works great! The only downside to this medication is it totally killed my sex drive. My poor husband thinks it's him, but he doesn't understand how these type of things work. I discussed with my doctor and she added wellbutrin, telling me that it has been known to increase the sex drive. I had to quit taking the wellbutrin though because it made me slap crazy! As far as the zoloft, I don't think I will ever change medications, as this is a miracle worker for me!

PROS: My shoulders are where they need to be
CONS: Made me sleepy during the day, switched it to take with my night-time meds.

For years I've dealt with anxiety. My shoulders were always around my ears and my neck hurt constantly. It throbbed and made so much noise I couldn't sleep without a sound machine at night. After seeing a Psychiatrist a couple weeks ago he put me on new meds and this one was my saving grace. I feel tons better!

PROS: helped with depression
CONS: weight gain,hot flashes,

Worked well to stop me from crying all day and thinking about self harm. I have been on 50mg for about 6 months and have noticed weight gain and increased cravings for food also hot flashes and night sweats. It seems to work fast though so I would recommend it sense I haven't had an severe side effects yet.

PROS: briefly made me feel better, slight decrease in appetite
CONS: intial sideaffects were pretty horrible, withdrawal, brief increase in anxiety,

The first 2 weeks of being on this was kind of hard. I started on 25mg for 4 days and increased to 50mg. I felt nauseous, had headaches, occasionally couldn't sleep, increase in anxiety (this was terrible for me, I have NEVER been an anxious person and it was extremely hard for me to deal with, it went away tho), trouble breathing, and probably more but I can't remember. My energy was increased, I was running a bit more but that was it. I was increased to 100mg and that had no side affects or any affect at all. I started feeling more depressed and had some suicidal thoughts while on 100mg, saw a psychiatrist and came off it. I was on sertraline for over 2 months and it didn't help. I came off sertraline while starting mirtazapine (I have a review on that aswell) so I'm not positive if it was withdrawal symptoms or sideaffects of starting mirtazapine but I think it was side affects, I had brain zaps, a little light headness, a bit of irritation but thats it. I was on 100mg and went down to 50mg for 2 days then down to 25mg for 2 more days then stopped.

I commonly order prescribed drugs via americantrustpills (seriously, this place sucks) free of danger. The fact is that I use to take lots of it so low expense is essential for me.

PROS: Virtually no side effects..well, apart from loss of labido
CONS: Loss of labido

I took this for around 6 months and stopped because it was no longer effective at keeping low mood at bay. Great side effect profile. Made me lose some weight (which was great). I think I probably need something a bi more hardcore (along with Therapy of course) to help with me depression. I would recommend, particularly for those who are worried about starting anti-depressants.

PROS: No side effects, evens out mood slightly
CONS: Bad withdrawal symptoms on missed dose. Didn't affect my anxiety

Missing doses results in withdrawal effects such as dizziness, light headedness, nausea and hot tingly flushes (not unlike the feeling that precedes pins and needles)

PROS: calmed anxiety
CONS: caused every crazy side effect in the book ...and then some.

Oh zoloft... I was only on 25 mg for several days, but the side effects were SO bad for me that I had to stop taking it. The first few days on it were pretty nice - anxiety seemed to melt away fairly easily and I overall just felt nice and calm. But, then the side effects began; first it messed with my appetite big time - I literally had to force myself to eat, even after a whole day of not eating much of anything due to the medication. I hated that, because I love to enjoy good food, but this made me lose all interest in food, period. That's not like me at all. Zoloft made me lose 5 lbs in one week, which was not good considering that I'm not overweight and I'm in good shape. So needless to say, I did not want to lose that weight. It also made my muscles sore/tight which resulted in me not being able to sleep, due to the fact that I was just so uncomfortable. And then out of nowhere on about the 5th day, I suddenly felt extremely hot, then really cold, and overall just not well. I took my temp. and had a fever of about 100 degrees. Then, I had this weird burning sensation running through my hands and the back of my neck. Also, I couldn't even form a coherent thought in my mind, literally. It was terrible. I felt like I was going nuts or something, I couldn't focus, and just felt plain horrible. Thank god I'm not suicidal, otherwise I'm sure that'd have been a moment where I would have had plenty of those thoughts floating around, too. I called my doctor and she told me to stop taking the zoloft immediately, so I did. But it took a good week for my body to slowly get back to normal. That week of getting the med. out of my system was rough as well. I had severe nausea, diarrhea, and I would get these odd feelings of detachment from reality, agitation, and just an overall feeling as if I didn't know what to do with myself and like I wanted to crawl out of my skin. Oh, and zoloft made me EXTREMELY forgetful ..I had trouble remembering conversations I just had 2 days before (I'm only 25, so this is not something that is normal for me). Ugh it was just so uncomfortable and such a bad experience. I never want to feel like that again, because it was just scary. That was my first experience with taking an SSRI, and I can gladly say I'll never try another one. I don't know, I guess my body just doesn't tolerate them at ALL. But, I'm feeling much better now though (1 month later) and I'm mentally back to my old self (thankfully). I'm seeing a therapist whose teaching me breathing/relaxation techniques instead of taking a med. every day to deal with the panic attacks. I feel this approach is much better for me

PROS: gave me mental energy
CONS: gave me insomnia, worsened anxiety

Didn't work well for me but it did have an effect which is more than I can say for some. Not a lot happened at 50mg and then I went to 100mg. At the time I thought the worsened anxiety was a sign of getting better, the numbness of depression going away, but in all honesty I now realise I was not well. I was buzzing with energy, unable to sleep all night then exhausted physically all day. In general it seemed to worsen all of my anxiety symptoms (nausea and throwing up, suicide thoughts, panic attacks, poor concentration). On the other hand, I don't recall any side effects. If I missed one nothing bad happened. It just didn't suit me.

PROS: Helped a lot with anxiety
CONS: Worsened depression

I originally went on zoloft because I was having panic attacks several times a day and it worked very well for these. However, it worsened a lot of my depression symptoms. I do however have mild bipolar disorder so that could be the cause of the worsened depression. Great medication for anxiety, liked it better than stuff like xanex.

PROS: helped social anxiety greatly
CONS: upset stomach occasionally, takes a while to work

Greatly improved my anxiety over a period of 9 months. It was a hard medication to get used to. Really affects the stomach and cause huge changes to your appetite... Which is good sometimes

PROS: Inexpensive
CONS: Sexual side effects, did not treat problem

I took this medication for generalized anxiety twice, discontinuing it both times. The longest I could go on it was one month; shorter was 10 days or so. Note that neither of these are long enough to realize the full effects of the drug (can take ~6 weeks). I quit because there were pronounced sexual side effects; it took me DAYS to ejaculate, which my girlfriend did not appreciate. I have since tried bupropion, which was effective immediately and with few side effects. Basically, your mileage may vary.

PROS: not a lot of side effects
CONS: doesn't work for long

I have been on and off of zoloft for years and years. It is my go-to, safe med.. Unfortunately, it stops working after a few months. I have taken as much as 200mg, but anything over 100mg. makes me very anxious. It does not help with panic attacks for me at all.

PROS: Reduction in depression and anxiety,
CONS: Weight gain.

I have been taking Zoloft for 3 months and I've had immeasurable improvements in my anxiety and depression, even on the lowest 50mg dose.

PROS: Kept my depression at bay
CONS: had to increase dosage to maintain effectiveness until even the highest dosage didn't work

Periodically got hot flushes (I'm only 20) and terrible night sweats. Spent five years on it and it worked well mostly.

PROS: Zoloft helped me sleep for some time when I was unable to do so
CONS: Caused me to have worse suicidal thoughts

I was on Zoloft for about six months. I took Zoloft to treat depression after my brother died. I was being treated by a primary care physician and was never referred to a psychiatrist. The only person who cared about how the medication was effecting me was my psychologist. The medication helped with some anxiety but other than that my depression got worse and I nearly committed suicide because of it. I quit Zoloft when I developed an addiction to Vicodin.

PROS: It has calmed my anxiety down tons in the past (and in the present).
CONS: From what I experience, it can cause you to have random muscle jerks, but that's about it as long as long-term side-effects go. It can be a big rough when you first start it, but after you give it a month or two, it should work wonders (if it's the right

I have been using it on different does for close to 6 years, and it has done WONDERS. I would definitely recommend this for GAD and OCD.

PROS: None!
CONS: diarrhea, nausea, headache, insomnia, sexual disfunction

After a few months of Paxil I switched to Zoloft. After being on Zoloft for a month I had a week of miserable side effects two different times. After each dose I had horrible diarrhea and nausea. I couldn't sleep and when I did, I woke easily and it would take forever to get back to sleep. I always felt nervous and on edge. I was better off without the drug.
