Also known as Depramil in some countries.

What is Celexa?

Celexa is in a class of medicines called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

Celexa tablets and oral solution are used to treat depression. It may also be used to treat other conditions, as prescribed by your doctor.

Who Should Not Take Celexa?

Never take Celexa if you are taking another drug used to treat depression, called a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI), or if you have stopped taking an MAOI in the last 14 days. Taking Celexa close in time to an MAOI can result in serious, sometimes fatal, reactions, including:

  • High body temperature
  • Coma
  • Seizures (convulsions)

MAOI drugs include Nardil (phenelzine sulfate), Parnate (tranylcypromine sulfate), Marplan (isocarboxazid), and other brands.

Common Side Effects

The most commonly experienced side effects include: insomnia, somnolence and/or nausea. Additional side effects you may experience include dry mouth, vomiting, dizziness, agitation and asthenia.

What Are The Risks?

The following are the major potential risks and side effects of Celexa therapy. However, this list is not complete.

  • Possible life-threatening serotonin syndrome when used with triptan medicines: See FDA Alert [07/2006] above.

  • Infant persistent pulmonary hypertension: See FDA Alert [07/2006] above.

  • Suicidal thoughts or actions:Persons taking Celexa may be more likely to think about killing themselves or actually try to do so, especially when Celexa is first started or he dose is changed. People close to persons taking Celexa can help by paying attention to changes in user’s moods or actions. Contact your healthcare professional right away if someone using Celexa talks about or shows signs of killing him or herself. If you are taking Celexa yourself and you start thinking about killing yourself, tell your healthcare professional about this side effect right away.

  • Stopping Celexa: Do not stop taking Celexa suddenly because you could get side effects. Your healthcare professional will slowly decrease your dose.

  • Bleeding problems: Celexa may cause bleeding problems, especially if taken with aspirin, NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen), or other drugs that affect bleeding.

  • Mania: You may become unusually hyperactive, excitable or elated.

  • Seizures: You may experience a seizure (convulsion), even if you are not taking Celexa close in time with an MAOI.

  • Pregnancy: Tell your healthcare professional if you are or may be pregnant (see FDA Alert [07/2006] above). In addition to the issue described in the alert, babies delivered to mothers taking Celexa late in pregnancy have developed problems, such as difficulty breathing and feeding.

  • Sexual problems: You may have problems with impotence (erectile dysfunction), abnormal ejaculation, difficulty reaching orgasm, or decreased libido (sexual desire).

  • Other side effects include dry mouth, nausea, and sleepiness.

  • Tell your healthcare professional about all your medical conditions, especially liver or kidney disease. Tell your healthcare professional if you are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed your baby.

Are There Any Interactions With Drugs or Foods?

  • Do not take Celexa with Lexapro (escitalopram), another drug used to treat depression, because they are very similar and you could get an overdose.

  • Celexa may interact with medicines other than the ones already mentioned in this information sheet. These interactions can cause serious side effects. Tell your healthcare professional about all medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements you take.

  • If you plan to drink alcohol, talk to your healthcare professional.

How Do I Take Celexa?

Celexa is taken by mouth, with or without food, exactly as prescribed by your healthcare professional.

Special Precautions

Avoid abrupt discontinuation of this medication.

PROS: None for me
CONS: Reacted badly to this med, may have been allergic reaction

Celexa made me really tired and drugged feeling. I also take Wellbutrin and because of situational depression the Celexa was added. I also take Klonopin occasionally as needed but never at the same time as any other meds. I am not a fan of this med but my experience may not be typical, not sure.

PROS: None yet
CONS: Tiredness, feeling "out of it" within 2 hours of taking it. (20mg)

Not seeing any changes and I have been taking it for almost two weeks. But on the first day I took the Celexa, (within a couple of hours) I was having continous waves of euphoria that lasted for about 30 minutes or so, which was strange but only happened the first day. I am taking Wellbutrin SR 150mg 2x's a day in addition to the Celexa.

PROS: None
CONS: Extreme anxiety, uncontrollable whole body rocking, spontaneous unexplainable hysterical crying fits

I was on this medication for four days and it made me crazy. My severe reaction to it scared my doctor, and she told me to just stop taking it completely. Within two days I was completely back to normal. I will likely not be trying Celexa again.

PROS:
CONS: nausea, increased depression and anxiety, light headed, insomnia

I only took citalopram for 2 weeks so I can't really say how it is long term, but personally, it was not good for me. I had worsening depression on 10 mg citalopram, terrible insomnia, anxiety/panic attacks I was also very irrational in my thinking and worrying a lot. I m going back to fluoxetine.

PROS: Helped me sleep, lessened the intense depression
CONS: Stopped working after a while

Overall this was a relatively good medication however the state of my health meant it ceased to work after a period of time.

PROS: So far so good - just started taking it.
CONS: Makes me feel agitated and afraid... of CATS.

I have extreme fear of CATS and not just big lion/tiger/lynx/puma type cats...ALL cats. Especially Siamese cats. I hate them with the essence of my being and I'm terrified if I even see one across the street. I have to run back into my house and pull the drapes because I'm afraid the cat will come across the street and try to get in the house. I tell them not to but then they visit me at night when I'm asleep. I can't shake them. So anyway, I'm hoping this new drug helps a lot. I can't tell yet because when I take it I get nervous and start thinking about the cats. I'll report back when I know more.

PROS: relieved overwhelming sadness/crying, where many others failed/had awful side-effects
CONS: only achieved this in maximum dose of 60mg daily

I've suffered with pretty severe depression since my late teens. After many trials with different anti-depressants/anti-anxiety meds (alone and combinations), including Zoloft, Prozac, Buspar, Klonopin, Lexapro, Elavil, Celexa has by far been the best. When it seemed to start losing effectiveness at 60mg daily, adding Wellbutrin SR 300mg daily has been pretty effective. Overall, Celexa has been great!

PROS: Has calmed the intenseness of the anxiety, depression
CONS: So far, none.

Granted, I have only been taking Celexa for 6 days but it has already helped me tremendously. It has taken the intense edge off of the paralyzing anxiety and depression I was feeling. At least I am beginning to function again. I had been perscribed Prozac and Zoloft in the past for SAD and they did nothing at all. It was very discourageing. I hesitated trying something again but the depression was becoming very severe and affecting my life in a prolonged and negitive way. So far this has been a God-send. I actually feel better already. I do have a history of seizure disorder but have been seizure free 11 years and take phenobarbitol, just in case. An EEG was done first and it continued to show NORMAL.

PROS: None
CONS: DIZZYNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a 25 year old male who was perscribed to this for anxiety and seritonin reasons. 20mg.once a day. The first day I took this, It made me extremely tired to the point I had to sit down allllll day and yawn to no end. (which was tolerable). However, the 2nd day, was a completly different story. I got VERY dizzy and started shaking uncontrollably and just in general was NOT enjoying myself. I had to call emergancy services because the side effects wer just too sever and I wanted it out of my system a.s.a.p. Emergancy services than told me there was nothing I could do except go to the E.R. which I wanted to avoid because of cost. But the symptons wer getting even more severe to the point I could not belive! and I ended up having a panic attack! it was the scariest 5-10 min of my life! It doesnt end there. I took zanax to calm me down which worked but made me tired, and I ended up sleeping 16 hours. and 3 days later (now) I am STILL getting dizzy every now and then. Be carefull with this drug!

CONS: Made me tired, irritable, and weak

Made me tired, irritable, and weak, no improvement in depression. Perhaps made colors a little more vivid, though.

PROS: able to leave the house again, can converse without effort again. sometimes even able to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
CONS: absolutely exhausted by 6pm ready for bed.

I suffered from panic attacks, anxiety, pmt and depression which was helped marginally by fluoxetine over a long period of time but then my world was tipped upside down by a bereavement and a number of other circumstances beyond my control. i became suicidal and couldnt leave the house for 5 months (i couldnt listen to music, read or watch tv or even keep it tidy while i was indoors). i've been on citalopram for just over 2 months and am slowly but surely getting my life back. i have been out every day and can do most of the normal household chores. All of my friends and family that are around me can see the difference and are so pleased with my progress. i felt the effects within a few days, by the end of the first week i was functioning almost normally again. the only downside is that i am tired by 4pm can just about cook dinner serve it and clear up then by 6pm i'm ready for bed. the circumstances are still beyond my control but rather than feeling overwhelmed by the injustice of my situation and wanting to end it, i know and accept there is nothing i can do about it and am focusing on the other things in my life i CAN control and trying not to worry or think about the situation I cant.

PROS: Lifted mood, increased motivation, less anxiety
CONS: Insomnia, some digestive issues

I've only been on Celexa (20mg) for a couple months, but it's been working pretty well for me. The first two weeks on it were hell (felt sick, no appetite, digestive issues, weight loss, etc,...), but after all the initial side-effects subsided it started to do its job. I have problems with insomnia now though (my PCP and I are working on a solution for that; we're trying Ambien first for a few nights). I take it in the morning, and for most of the day I can feel its effects. It's really picked me up off the floor.

PROS: Effective with minimal side effects
CONS: None yet

Prescribed for depression due to emotional crisis. One week of 20mg dose and side effects quit after 5 days and mood was altered. Sexual side effects minimal at this point. 12 years ago, Paxil was perscribed for depression and the side effects were significant and effectiveness suspect.

PROS: Eases depression
CONS: Sleepy, diarrhea, increased appetite(not an issue for me), numbness, sexual disfunction

Started at 20mg and now up to taking 40mg of this stuff a day and haven't had any major complaints other than tiredness and the decreased libido. I actually stopped dreaming on this stuff, opposite the experience of others it seems. My dreaming did return though it seems regressed, pulling out fragments of stuff from way past. It does seem to lift my depression somewhat, mostly by making me feel numb. Doesn't really do anything for my anxiety as far as i've noticed which is why the psychiatrist keeps cranking the dosage up.

PROS: depression went away and i still had my personality
CONS: discontinuation syndrome

this is the first antidepressant that helped me and didn't make me feel like a zombie. i decided to stop taking it after about 10 months because i was feeling better and wanted to try to cope without meds. for a couple of weeks i was miserable while i was stopping celexa. i had restless leg syndrome (which was something i've never experienced), anxiety, and crying spells. those symptoms scared me so i'm trying lexapro now instead (6 months later). this drug was good for depression. don't impulsively stop taking it if you're feeling better (my mistake)!

PROS: I am now able to cope with extreme stress without over reacting and it has evened out my moods so I rarely feel depressed, I get along better with the relationships in my life. I am able to practice positive techniques vs, getting swept up with intense em
CONS: Initial adjustment was rough first 3 days wasn't able to function well, headache, my teeth hurt, I had to sleep all day and night, and then it gradually improved within a week was feeling much better .

If I miss a couple of days I can tell my responses begin to become more emotional, I feel less in control of myself without this medication. It does not "FIX" everything that takes a sincere effort to be positive and be the best you can. With 20 mgs. a day for over a year now so sexual side effects, a couple months of some leg twitching at night, exercise helped that. No weight gain or loss. No fogginess, if I miss a dose no problem. PMS better. I'm happy to have it. No insurance so it is affordable! Some chain stores have it for 4$ per 30 day supply! I do need more sleep, 8-9 hrs. a night.

PROS: decreased anxiety
CONS: weight gain, fatigue, keep having to up the dose, occasional stomach issues

I have been on Celexa for about 6 months now. I started taking it for anxiety/panic attacks. I started on 10mgs. I am now on 30mgs. It seems to work for awhile and then I start feeling anxious again and have to up the dosage. I have gained about 10 lbs. since taking it. There are days I feel really tired and could sleep all day if given the chance.I can tell I am unmotivated to do most things. Side effects were bad at the beginning of taking it, but it's leveled out some. I am also in CBT for the anxiety and want to withdrawal from this and not go up on the dosage anymore. Overall, I am continuing the medicine because I don't want to feel the anxiety/panic I once felt.

PROS: increased mood
CONS: sexual side effects, drowsiness, zombie-like and no motivation

Celexa was helpful at very low doses. staring off at too high of a dosage caused my side effects. The one big side effect I had was a complete loss of libido. Celexa mellowed me out but almost to the point of being a zombie. Things weren't as funny or sad and i basically lost interest in most things. I was tired a lot even when i received plenty of sleep. Sometimes it felt like i was walking around high, which isn't necessarily a good thing.

PROS: I'm really not sure there were any
CONS: Increased suicidality

Coming off Citalopram after being on the maximum dose gave me the first good days I'd had in months. I am convinced Citalopram made depression worse, and immediately heightened suicidality.

PROS: Decreased depression
CONS: Loss of ANY motivation, Loss of care for anything.

I was on this medication for 4 months for my anxiety and depression before I stopped. Although my depression did start to deminish, my motivation for ANYthing did, too. I lost any care for anything. I became this lazy mess. I'd rather be a more worrisome person who gets my stuff done.

PROS: has calmed my anxiety
CONS: suffering insomnia and drowsiness

So far so good. I was previously on this medication about 6 years ago, can't remember suffering any major side effects, but remember being generally happy with the results. I started taking Celexa again about 7 days ago to combat my OCD and anxiety. The first few days my hands were shaking slightly, but that has passed. The only other side effect I have noticed is difficulty sleeping which results in tiredness or drowsiness. I take the pill before bedtime, but have been waking hours earlier every morning and am then unable to fall back asleep. I also have no libido, but I think that can be blamed on my lack of energy. On the up side, I really feel like some of my anxiety has been relieved. I have felt a lot more optimistic have definitely noticed a change in my attitude...So far so good!

PROS: none
CONS: flu-like symptoms, worsened already severe insomnia, digestive problems, dizziness, descreased appetite, weight loss

I was prescribed this for depression after Prozac didn't work and gave me unbearable digestive problems. This stuff was far worse; starting about three days after my first dose I felt like I had the flu; I was constantly throwing up and suffered from vague aches and pains. It made me so dizzy when I stood up that I felt like I would pass out, and worsened my already severe insomnia. I also completely lost my appetite; food didn't seem appealing at all and when I forced myself to eat, it didn't taste right. I lost ten pounds on this medication and it took a lot of work to gain it back. I weaned myself off it after two weeks; I couldn't deal with it anymore. I cannot comment on how well this medication works for depression, as I didn't really give it a chance to work, but I wouldn't recommend it because of its side effects.

PROS: lifts the fog so you can start feeling like a real person again
CONS: physical withdrawal symptoms are intense (dizziness, nausea, general grossness, etc.) and start happening even if I only miss a couple days

on 40 mg dose for about a year now, and no complaints (except for withdrawal symptoms). it's worked really well for me. the generic is pretty reasonably priced.

PROS: Fewer side effects than many
CONS: Extremely hard to withdraw from

This seemed to keep my depression suppressed a bit. After taking it for several years, however, I did develop tremors and spastic movements and was forced to switch to Lexapro. Withdrawing from Celexa (or even missing a dose), especially if you're at a high dose, can be very difficult, even with gentle tapering. I switched over to Lexapro and avoided the "brain shivers" of citalopram withdrawal. Celexa's pretty expensive, too, but I think the generic is cheaper.

PROS: Reduced anxiety and depressive symptoms
CONS: increased sweating and insomnia

I have been on this for about 4 months. After my zoloft experience I was hesitant to try another SSRI. Fortunently this medication actually did what it was supposed to! Really no complaints except it reduces my inhibitions some, but I think thats a good thing

PROS: Helps with depression, Better than lexapro
CONS: Did not help enough with anxiety

I have been on Celexa for a year (citalopram) Helped somewhat with depression but after a year of being on it with little improvement (then switching to 40 mg and still no improvement) my doctor at mental health clinic diagnosed me with major depressive disorder and put me on Abilify and 20mg of celexa also.

PROS: No more suicidal depression
CONS: none

I was put on celexa as an extra antidepressant and it totally took away all of my suicidal thoughts, feelings, etc. I still get depressed but I can handle it. It is sort of a numb depression. This drug saved my life along with Lamictal.

PROS: Aids in elevating extreme depression, slowed social anxiety.
CONS: Intense side effects, increased suicidal urges, and general agitation initially.

Side effects nasty first few weeks. Extreme headaches, lightheaded, low blood pressure, suicidal thoughts, sadness, nausea, aches, etc. Immediate help with social anxiety. Weeks of counselling and treatment alleviated mood.

PROS: Not sure yet
CONS: haven't noticed any

I have been on this drug for about 3 weeks and I haven't noticed a real difference. I'm a little less depressed but I still feel anxiety. I'm hoping that another week or two will show more promise. If not, then it's back to the ol' pill dispenser.

PROS: none, My body did not tolorate this SSRI
CONS: feelings of electrical shock allover body, severe nausea, anxiety became 10 times worse, muscle twitching, sweating

This product may work for others, but my body told me right away after 4 days of taking it that it wasn't going to let me try it any longer. The side effects were unbearable, and the feeling of electrical shock went from head to toe. I felt like my anxiety went 10 times worse. Everyone is different as I cannot tolorate Celexa at all but I tolorate Zoloft side effect free. Major difference even though both are a form of SSRI.

PROS:
CONS: Side Effects, Allergic Reaction

This medication was good for me for a certain amount of time. I started it about three-four weeks ago, but then I discovered I was having an allergic reaction. I also found it bad for side effects, but they did go away after 2 weeks or a little over that. But it DID help.

PROS:
CONS:

I only took Celexa for 2 weeks so I can't really say how it is long term, but it was not good for me. I had worsening depression on Celexa and very irrational thinking and worrying.

PROS: none for me
CONS: made me suicidal, couldn't be alone, altered my personality

This was the first anti-depressant I took and it was not a good choice for me. It made me suicidal, made me panic if I was by myself, and altered my personality somewhat. I have known people that this drug has helped, but it was not for me. If you feel any of the side effects I felt, please call your doctor ASAP and DO NOT let them give you a higher dose. A higher dose made things worse for me. It wasn't until I took this drug that I started having anxiety attacks. I'm not saying this drug altered my brain chemicals that much, but it's possible.

PROS: It has helped with my depression
CONS:

It's on the list that you can get at several large retail chains (at least in Iowa), so it's cheap, even without insurance!

PROS: After increasing the dosage from 20 mg to 40 mg, I initially experienced a HUGE improvement in my depression. Unfortunately, it is not working as well for me now. But at least I got about 9 good months out of it. Also, the generic (citalopram) is avail
CONS: No cons. While it worked, it really worked!

Celexa has worked wonders for me. And even though it is not working as well for me now as it did, I am still no where near as depressed as I was before I started to take it. Unfortunately, I am stressed to the max at work, and that may be the real reason it doesn't seem to be working as well. I bet if I quit my job, I will feel much better!

PROS: Helped with depression
CONS: weight gain

Worked for my depression big time, but it made me gain so much weight which then the weight gain made me feel depressed. I was on it for 7 years weaned myself off along with my ativan. Was feeling great for a few months then had major melt down and went back on it. Currently off Celexa and back on prozac. Lost 34 lbs. and still losing. So now I am feeling more self confidence!!

PROS: WAY more energy
CONS: triggered acute mania, insomnia, irritability, sexual problems.

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and GAD over a year ago, and I started taking this medicine to help with my depressive episodes and anxiety. The problem is that Celexa caused me to have an ACUTE manic episode. The initial waiting period for me didn't exist -- I felt its effects in less than a week. The side effects it caused were numerous. The ones I remember the most were insomnia, irritability, and sexual problems (both significantly decreased libido and inability to orgasm). This drug may work well for those with Major Depressive Disorder or anxiety problems, but if you have bipolar disorder, you should be cautious.

PROS: it works
CONS: sexual side effects

Antidepressant properties are solid. It works well. I generally only get one side effect from antidepressants: no matter which one it is, if it demonstrates even the smallest possibility of causing sexual side effects then I'm going to be the person who has problems with it. Catch 22.

PROS: May reduce emotional symptoms such as crying. Decreases appetite.
CONS: De-personalisation, insomnia, switches off sex-drive, nausea, sweating, lack of concentration, no motivation.

I took this a few years ago, I (mistakenly) decided to try again, partly to aid weight loss. Then I realised why I stopped first time ! Please note this is just my personal reaction, it may suit others ! I felt nauseous and had heartburn, terrible hot flushing and sweating. I felt anxious, couldn't sleep, nightmares when I did. I lost interest in sex within 24 hours, anorgasmia, lack of feeling and emotion, extreme anger and aggression. Unable to and not wanting to do anything constructive, couldn't read a book. Mood swings, mainly negative with brief highs. The only use I can see for this medication is for example in a circumstance such as bereavement where it may be helpful to be switched off and on auto-pilot !

PROS: stopped suicidal ideation. no PMS, less reactive
CONS: nightmares, drowsiness

I stopped crying all day and it took the edge off things but it wasn't a "cure". It didn't improve my confidence and I didn't feel happy.
