I have been attending various churches for many years of my life. Lately I have not gone for about a year or more now. There was a recent poll from the Pew Research asking people which denomination they belong to. Many had picked the denominations but then there was a choice of "none" and "done". The ones that are "none" are usually ones that are not religious. The "done" are the ones who went to church regularly but have decided to not go anymore. I am for now a "done".

I used to like to go to church, but not anymore. To me it's because the churches have changed over the years and not for better. I don't like the style of worship music that they have now and I don't care for the Mega-churches. Anyone else feel that way?

Yes, I am old-fashioned, and I miss the little churches with hymnals....the old hymns.

I like to worship in private, being at a church can put a lot of pressure on me even if it's a "good one". I'd like to try going to church again but it's hard for me when I'm in a new location and I have to try a few before finding the "right one".

My entire existence is based on my Christianity, but at the moment and for quite awhile, I am not/have not been going to church. I actually don't think it's the churches, I think it's my problem. I am so sickened by mega-"pastors" in their $40 million jets taking advantage of simple people in rural Texas that I have become unfairly suspicious of all churches. Not fair to them. All me. I really need to work on this, as I would like to go.

I also would probably be counted in the “ done “ column. I was raised a Roman Catholic. I like cathedrals. I liked when the mass was performed in Latin.
I guess I could always find a nice looking church. What’s astonishing is growing up and realizing that the church is a man made and run business. Non profitable churches close. There’s a shortage of priests. The belief in “ God “ is on the decline. Where there once was hope , there is now despair. Every different religion thinks that “ they “ are the real one. I can’t even sit through a full mass anymore, ( and they even shortened it to keep you till the end ! )
I just ask whatever “God” is out there to give me the strength to get through the day. And I pray that I never lose faith.

I feel much the same. My affiliation was Catholic. By the time I was 8 y.o., I was very skeptical about a lot of the miraculous stuff, but I still loved church. Then they started changing stuff and a lot of beauty got lost.

The thing that really drove me away was when they started with the handshaking in the middle of Mass. I absolutely hate that. I've been with friends to other Christian churches where they do that, and it seems fine. People are really friendly and warm, and the handshaking feels natural. People actually exchange a few friendly words. I enjoyed it. But, at a Catholic Mass, it feels forced, stilted and out of place. People whisper "Peace be with you." at each other, but it's scripted. It's in the middle of the sacred liturgy, so no one feels free to start chatting. It's just this dry, formal, little ritual, where you turn in every direction, and I hate it. It would be better if we did that before Mass started and could actually chat with each other, or say a few sincere words of our own. That's how it was at churches of other faiths that I went to.

Then there's the awful music. I love and collect songs of every type. These new-fangled Catholic hymns are atrociously lacking in any poetry or in any melodic beauty. They're awful. I miss the organ music. For some reason, a piano sounds crappy, when it's played in a Catholic church. I like the guitars, but the songs just aren't much good.

Then a lot of the Catholic churches built in modern times are simply ugly. They got rid of some things, like a lot of the candles. An electric candle is not a candle IMHO.

So I've drifted away for these and other reasons. I used to love to stop in to a church in the middle of the week to say a few prayers and feel nearer to God. But now the churches are mostly all locked up. It used to be that we felt like they belonged to us. Now they seem to belong to the diocese, and that's not exactly "us" anymore. My church where I grew up was closed. A lot of parishes and their churches have been closed by the diocese, as not being financially sustainable. It's heart-breaking to see the place where you made so many memories shuttered.

I miss how it used to be.

I have tried all kinds of churches, including Catholic. I very much agree with the hand shaking that they did there. I forgot all about that since it's been a long time I was there.

In the Christian churches the new music that they do now is just awful. I don't know why they just suddenly have to change it. I guess it's because they want younger people in. Older people do not care for that kind of music. I miss the organ and piano music that it used to be.

I love worship and church. I incorporate it into my life. I love worship time in church. I love going, and i love serving. These things grow on us over time, 1 year isnt long enough to spiritually grow, and to be spiritually developed. Try again, you can make spirituality work.
