So, I've started to have an interest in the game "Far Cry 5", and before then I'd have on-and-off again religious delusions, but now I feel as if the delusions [namely one that makes me think I've been chosen by God to save people from the rapture] are getting kind of worse since I started getting more and more interested in it?
What I'm trying to say is can people get delusions or have their delusions get worse based off of things similar to it? |

Hi butchfauna. Welcome to Psych Central. I am sorry you are suffering from delusions. Delusions can be a serious symptom of losing touch with a rational view of the world and may need to be treated by a psych professional.

I had really crazy religious delusions for a while when I was psychotic. But I found that a lot of people here were hesitant to talk about that sort of thing because there is a fine line between delusion/mental illness and faith/supernatural stuff. *shrugs*

Hey there butchfauna! Fellow schizoaffective. And I can answer you with the utmost certainty: YES. Delusions can and will get worse based on your interests. I have experienced this first hand and continue to experience it; although mine don't necessarily have to do with religion, the grandiosity elements certainly pervade with mine. It's still very difficult for me to read between reality and my delusions, and my interests at the time virtually always come into play somehow. __________________ h e l p ---------------------- Dx: Schizoaffective Medication: Prozac 60mg, Lithium 450mg 2x a day, Vraylar 1.5mg, Klonopin as needed |

I too have religious delusions. Most recently was calling people to warn them to repent because judgement day is upon us. Needless to say it will come one day and being prepared won't hurt.

I've had religious delusions before, when I was doing really bad. I thought I was in hell for trying to commit suicide (I'm Catholic) so I was in a really bad place.

I think it makes sense. When I had my first psychotic break, I believe a lot of things fueled the fire to lead to a complete break. I was preoccupied with ghosts for a long time. Then I digged deeper doing "ghost hunts". The break happened after playing with the Ouija board. During the break, I wrote letters and the "demon" would respond through me by writing back. It got bad. Of course, it didn't help that I lived in a community where religion is big. I don't remember much from the break. I do remember the feeling of being so scared because it was legitimately a scary movie for me.

There seems to be a correlation with your interests and delusions. I was diagnosed with schizoaffective a few years ago after a number of years of worrying over how Saturn was controlling the world with the numbers 3, 6, and 9, and seeing connections to Saturn through the game Final Fantasy 7. Anyway, my family got me into counselling and I took meds for a while and realized how disconnected those thoughts were from reality.

I have to say, I experience delusions myself. Famous people want to meet me, an old employer is going to give me a check for a billion dollars, I now speak several languages taught to me just by hearing people speak them on the street, etc. What is difficult about these delusions is that they take energy and attention away from reality. Sometimes I accomplish almost nothing in a whole day because of these symptoms.
I would recommend seeing a mental health professional soon; he or she can help you determine what to do next. |
