My psychotic features have deactivated after many years of being unwell, it took great effort to make it here to type this message. I have been severely ill for several decades. So there is hope for those who have been unwell for many years. I am not looking for salvation or to play saviour. Hoping for nice chats, not gloom sessions..

Hello Resetter good to hear you are doing well and remain out of psychosis.
I have been able to stay out of psychosis for 4 years now so I am celebrating that too. I am good at supporting others and prefer up and positive chats too. It is good to meet you. Marylinx |

Hi,
I am doing okay now, only a month or two from having paranoia and delusions. I feel well, in fact I am so busy I don't even have time to think about my mental health issues. I'm sitting on my porch, out in the fresh air, surrounded by my kitties. Life is good, wouldn't you agree? |

My name is Aaron and I am 40 years old. My mental illness has evolved on me. I used to deal with unbearable anxiety, depression and panic. Over the last 15 years I became fearful for my life by a gang and had enormous fear. I thought my medication was tampered with and had real physical symptoms. I have been hospitalized between 15 to 20 times. My current diagnosis is schizoaffective disorder. I am on 8 medications, and have nearly ended my life 5 times. I'm lucky to be writing this post. I need to know what is the tried and true anti-psychotic that truly works. I'm taking Latuda currently. Thank you very much. Aaron

This is a difficult question to answer, because each person responds differently to different drugs, at different times. For me, Abilify worked well, but it heightened my triglycerides, which can cause heart attacks. So, no more Abilify. Risperidone worked well, but it caused such bad tremors in my hands and feet that I could hardly raise a glass to drink, and it was hard to hold pills in my hands. Over time, my psychiatrist told me, the tremors would become permanent. So, no more Risperidone. Now I am on Latuda, too, and it works all right but not great. Unfortunately, your results will vary by medication, and the only way to find out what is most effective is to try them and risk bad side effects. The other bummer is that your body gets used to drugs, and they lose effectiveness. So even if you find a drug that is effective in fighting your symptoms, after a few years it may no longer work, and you're back to trying various drugs for a while as you seek a more effective medicine. Wish I had better news, but I've been schizoaffective for 11 years, and these are my experiences with medicinal drugs. You might also check into using Cognitive Behavioral Social Skills Training, which trains you to recognize a psychotic attack when it takes place, and to combat it. I got this training through the VA, but it is a real effort: it took 6 months of twice-a-week classes to learn the techniques, and they are only effective when the symptoms are not too strong. But it is better than nothing, and it beats stuffing more drugs into my body. Finally, the aging process can reduce your symptoms and bring you relief. I don't remember the source, because this was years ago, but I read an article online that said many people with mental illness find their symptoms easing as they reach old age. The brain chemicals change, and long-term mental illness comes to an end. I am 52 and am really putting my hopes in this process. I am so tired of bursts of "good news" as the voices in my head tell me I'm going to win the Nobel Prize, and my hot 25 year old girlfriend is just waiting to meet me, etc. My hopes have been raised and dashed, raised and dashed, many a time. And don't get me started on the hallucinations... I wish you well with Latuda, and may it crush your psychosis and bring you peace! |
