Hello, I have Schizophrenia and have been pretty stable for the past year, I feel good about myself and the place that I'm in right now, so when I saw somebody on my Facebook friends list also struggling with the disease, I reached out to offer support and advice. I wouldn't call this person a friend, more of an acquaintance I know from high school. This guy is constantly posting on Facebook (like 12-15 times a day) and always seems to be in some kind of conflict with another person. Because he has Schizophrenia, he plays the victim card in these conflicts and is always accusing the other person of being insensitive, when most of the time, he's the one at fault. I've told him numerous times via private Facebook message that he should step away from social media for a while because what he posts causes unnecessary anxiety and all these public arguments and conflicts makes others see him in an unpleasant light. He agrees and says he will step away from Facebook, but every time, within a couple hours he's back on Facebook posting about how he's perfect and everybody else are the problem. My last effort to help was I gave him the link to this site and told him Psych Central would be a much more appropriate place to do all his posting and ranting. He didn't reply to that message and immediately was back on Facebook posting his usual stuff, about how he's godly and everybody else is an idiot. I've decided that I'm going to stop trying to help him because he doesn't listen and obviously isn't interested in changing his life and getting better. What do you guys think?

As painful as it is, you can't help somebody who doesn't want the help. Obviously, he doesn't think what he's doing is problematic to want to change it. I think that you will just have to let it go for your own sake. As you said, you weren't that close, so maybe you should unfriend him, or at least unfollow his posts so that they're not upsetting you anymore?

All the best

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will unfriend him because him not listening to my honest advice has been very frustrating. It was hard for me to tell myself that I was going to stop trying to help him though, I think I'm a naturally helpful person. But I just have to keep telling myself that it's not my fault that he's doing what he's doing.

Turns out he deleted me and sent me a message saying that I was annoying him and that he doesn't need any advice because he's perfect in every way. I just hope for his sake he doesn't end up saying the wrong thing to the wrong guy and gets beat up.
