The main cause of the "National Alliance for the Seriously Mentally Ill" is involuntary outpatient commitment. They refer to it as assistant outpatient treatment. AOT for short. So I thought everyone in the group was for "AOT" I found out yesterday that not every member of NASMI is for involuntary outpatient commitment. Now I can't tell how many members isn't for "AOT" I found out some people in the group believe in long term including life time care for people with schizophrenia. Okay perhaps some people with this major mental illness need longer hospitalizations than what most HMOs and other health insurance pays for. Conversely I fear many patients could be inpatient much longer than they need to be. Do you think its possible that some people with schizophrenia need long term, ie years of care,or even lifetime care?

Yes I do think we need outpatient involuntary treatment for those who cause a lot of chaos in day-to-day life of other people. It isn't for everyone, though.

Its interesting you write you are pro AOT. At least for some people with SZ. I am not criticizing. It is a very controversial concept. Well that's why there are 32 flavors of Baskin Robbins. What I mean is everyone is an individual with individual thoughts, tastes.

Yes they need to bring back the asylums I find it very hard to live day to day and only do well in hospital,I wish everyday they brought back the asylums.Many schiz can’t cope go off their meds and cause chaos and enormous stress to their family, thousands and thousands are homeless or missing.

Not aslyums, that'd be scary, but much-improved hospitals should work. For long-term living too. Or perhaps nursing homes?
