Are you the kind of person who has to constantly advance to be happy or are you happy with what you have right now? I personally find that to be happy I have to have reasonably low expectations but that doesn’t really stop me from advancement. I just have minimal expectations and prefer to be pleasantly surprised if things go better than I expect. Many people however require a constant elevation in status to be happy, keeping happiness a moving target only in grasp for a short period. Which do you prefer and why? I feel like this is related to gratitude and living in the moment instead of living in either the future or the past.

Great question SP. I'm the kind of person that is happy with what I have right now. Sometimes I am anticipating or looking forward to something, like right now I am looking forward to my birthday next month even though what I want to do (go to the Aquarium) maybe I won't be able to because of COVID 19. But I'm happy with how things are now and most of the time that is how I am. I don't look too much into the future. We aren't promised tomorrow. I like to do this thing where you try to be grateful for things in alphabetical order. It really helps me stay in the here and now and see how blessed I am. I try not to live in the past at all. The past is the past and it cannot be changed nor can it hurt me. I have a pretty good life. I have parents who love me, I have a job to go to. I have a car. I have enough money to pay my bills. I live with my parents who help me with stuff like cooking, cleaning, and laundry. I'd rather be content with what I have then always keep looking for something better.

That’s the perfect example with the aquarium where it’s hoping but not expecting....I usually plan for the worst outcome but hope for the best. I feel like it keeps me balanced.

I need to constantly advance til I get to where I want to be. Which could take years.

I’m happy with what I have now. I have things that I haven’t achieved yet and once I get them I will be happier, but that doesn’t mean I’m not happy now. Even if I couldn’t get those other things that would make me happier, I’ll find another ways to be happier.

I really feel that my life is measured in hours and I don't have long here on Earth. So I try to create to express my soul. And since I feel most deeply when I write dramatic scenes, I try to write those kind of stories. I have another story ready that is genius, I just hope I have the capacity to follow through with it. But I do like editing and writing and reading and during these things is when I feel most content. It would be nice to be well off but this society makes that very difficult, so I have to take the road less traveled and have my own wins.

I'm happy with what I have now, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to advance, as well. I guess there's always a constant flux in life; we can always be somewhere else or do something else. But, for me, it has more to do with the fact that I'm advancing towards goals that makes me okay in the present, if that makes sense. I guess there's also a reciprocal relationship between being okay in the present and being able to advance towards my goals, too.

I'm content, I don't really need outside factors or constant advancements to make me happy. I'm fine being who I am at this moment in life, wherever I may be. I guess what I'm saying is that my happiness comes from within
