do any of you have issues with saving stuff attaching sentimental value to things and having trouble letting go of things?
I have historically....never gone through my stuff and cleaned stuff out and thrown stuff away. consequentially, I have a ton of stuff. I am just now, in the past few years, trying to go through it. but it seems like every time I do I just get increasingly more angry. I get angry at myself for saving everything, for not organizing properly, for attaching sentimental value to things, for buying so much stuff in the first place. and then I get overwhelmed and throw a tantrum and blow up my whole life and usually binge drink and act like an asshole.... seeing all these remnants from my past that I wanted to save at the time just triggers bad feelings for a variety of reasons.... how do I just get through this without totally getting in my own way? I get SO angry at myself and disappointed... like self hate rage. |

Calling, I've been trying to get more organized for the last 40 years. I'm just a natural-born slob. I mean, I can look at the mess and see that it needs to be cleaned up, but then I plan to do it later, and it never happens.
There's a ton of material in books and out on the net about getting organized, but there's no getting around the fact that eventually you're going to have to DO SOMETHING. As to the specific challenge of holding on to things with sentimental value, the short version of what I've learned pretty much boils down to (A) Actually holding on to the really really really special things, and (B) Taking pictures of the rest, putting the pictures in an album, and then getting rid of the things to a thrift shop. Best wishes...... __________________ |

I save old paperwork. And then HATE going through the papers. But I know it has to be done. I"m not organized in some areas of my life. I understand my life, and I have compassion for others who do the same thing. I"m resisting writing how to fix the issue, but I know the answer is already inside of you!!! You may not believe that but I do. Each of us can discover the way out. Some study it out, That's me. Some wait for things to happen, not the best way but I do know that taking small actions every day will help. Make it a habit to select one item and decide if you want to keep it or if you can do something with the item.
Small actions, lead to BIG rewards. Discovering your purpose can be extremely helpful. There I go, giving ideas that have worked for me. I hope I gave an idea. But I do believe that the answer is within YOU!! You got this!! (If I need to be your cheerleader, I will. And I don't even know you that well. But I do know that we all need someone on our side who believes in us) |
