Do you find or feel that even though you will get some relief after self harming, that it's difficult to make yourself do it?

When I want to self harm, even though I know I'll feel better after I do it, I still find it hard to purposely hurt myself. I mean, it's not agony or anything, just soreness and discomfort, but I still have to talk myself into it.

Sometimes. I've been self-harming so long now that's it's just second nature to me to do it, but I think I've done so much damage and done it for so long, it's become a bit boring.

It's just a pain hanging your arm in the air for 30 minutes just so the blood will stop dripping and you just get it all over the place.

It's not like I can do it in the bathroom, I have to do it in the privacy of my bedroom, and have all the things I need to do it.

But yeah, I'm so scarred, I think I've done enough damage to last. I can never wear T-shirts again.

It depends on how upset I am - the less upset, the harder to SI.

I kind of know what you mean. It's sometimes difficult to get myself to self harm, but not because I don't want to hurt myself. Probably because I can't find the energy to do it.

perhaps the difficulty means that there is something that may work better for you, something that does not involve self-harming?
I have gotten to a point with it where I will stop either before I start, or shortly after, if there is hesitation or pain. I know times like that it will not do anything for me.
It's ok to hesitate or to choose not to self-harm, even if you think doing it would make you feel better. It's ok to stop "early" or to choose not to do it even if you gather everything and have every intention of doing it. It's ok to cope in other ways. Sometimes the sh works, sometimes not, and that's ok. Maybe talk more about what's causing the hesitation? could be a lead on where to go next for different coping skills.
you are not weird for not wanting to do it, ultimately, that would be the "healthy" goal: to choose something else over self-harm (something less destructive).
Take that hesitation and make it work for you. If it gives you a moment to pick another coping skill, take that moment. Go play a sport, do some art, talk to a friend, listen to music, cry, write, reach out, do something nice for yourself instead...

if you dont want to self harm,...dont?

there are many other helpful things to do that you wont have to convince yourself to do that wont make you bleed.

This thread is 8 years old. I’m not sure why my old posts are being dragged back up.
