Can you seek medical care for SI wounds at an urgent care instead of going to the ER? Or will urgent care just have you sent to an ER for a psych eval?
In general I wouldn't hesitate to go to urgent care over the ER for wound care or whatever, but I wonder if they'll freak at the psych aspect. I'm not suicidal. Any wounds would very obviously be SH though. |

urgent care may end up contacting the ambulatory services to have to transported to the psych unit for an evaluation so it might be either way you’ll end up going in front of a psych doctor

I've never been to urgent care for SI wounds. I went to my dermatologist once because I already had an appointment so I thought, while I was there I would just have him check on some wounds for me. They were too late to stitch but he did ask me if I needed a psych eval. I think it depends on who the provider is at the urgent care. If they have enough training and care they probably wouldn't send you to the ER but I don't know that for sure. My PCP doesn't send me to the ER....

Yeah. My old GP was good about SI wounds too. But she knew me. She treated me a long time and listened to me. She knew the difference between SI and suicidality for me.
It's not that I wouldn't pass a psych eval, I just don't want to pay an ER copay or for an ambulance ride from the urgent care. Maybe if it becomes an issue, I'll just stay home until I can get in to see someone I already know. |

I hear you...even if I probably should go to the ER sometimes, I don't because the copay is ridiculous. I have to evaluate health insurance plans for my work to decide which ones to offer the employees and I'm looking at the cost of the deductibles and the cost of the ER as one of the main factors because I know what the employees make and therefore what they might be able to afford. Its a big responsibility--and its pretty stressful because I don't want my own personal opinions to color what options I'm able to provide the other employees. I wish health care was more affordable in general but I hate how expensive the ER is.
