Has anyone been able to stop SH cold turkey? Pastor T is seeming like that is what he is asking me to do while Regular T seems to be advocating a gradual strategy. I honestly don't know if I can just stop, on the other hand, the gradual approach doesn't seem to be working well either. I just don't know how to stop. A former T told me that it's going to take as long as it's going to take. Hopefully I am moving in the right direction. Any ideas? Hugs Kit

Thanks for posting this. Unfortunately I don't have any nifty suggestions for you. In my own case I stopped once I had done irreparable harm to myself & had to face the reality that, if I continued, I could make things even worse than they already were / are. Clearly that's not a strategy I would want to recommend to anyone.

The thing is, if it weren't for the fact I could make things even worse than they already are, I suspect I might do it again. (The urge is still there.) So personally I'm inclined to agree with your former T who said it will take as long as it takes. I know that's not the answer you were looking for. But it's the one I have. There are articles, in PC's archives, on the subject of how to change a bad habit. I don't know if there is anything in these articles that could be of help. However here are links to 3 of them:

Thanks @Skeezyks I always sort of thought myself. Like there will be one time when I go too far and then it will be like, okay I have to stop this. I thought it would be when I first got stitches, but that wasn't enough to deter me. Now I fear nothing will. Might just try to stop cold turkey and see what happens. Might not work but maybe it will. Thanks for your reply. HUGS Kit

Oddly, Pastor T hasn't really said anything, although he asks me every week whether or not I have SH-ed even though spoiler for Christianity
Possible trigger:
. I fully expect there to be relapses and he must also, since he asks me about it. Regular T says relapses are par for the course and to just not get stuck in a cycle where I SH for days on end. HUGS Kit

I agree that relapses happen, and therefore I like the comment "It takes as long as it takes."

Thanks Bill! HUGS!! I had a telehealth appointment with my care coordinator yesterday and we talked about self harm. She wants me to make a self harm crisis plan--like I have for suicide, but for self harm--by the time we talk next which is in two weeks. She said to ask my T to help me with it. She wanted me to commit to not Self Harming for the two weeks until I talk to her again but I was scared to because I think I will fail, based on how self destructive I have been feeling. But I found some good resources online so I am hoping that will help. HUGS Kit

I tried to stop cold turkey once, some years ago, but I went from one self-destructive behavior to another. Now, I'm learning that if I don't have the tools to deal with SH thoughts, I won't be able to stop them. PDOC always tells me that it will be a long road with lots of ups and downs and even some periods with no setbacks, but that the important thing is to learn to face life and use words or any other possible mean to express myself that doesn't imply harming myself.
