My dad and brother in law had some like that. Also my dad used to wear these green grey work pants with cuffs. He would put the cigarette out and if there was no ashtray he'd pick up the but and put it in his cuffs. Bet that made mum so happy when it came to wash day!

I recall my father smoking cigars while he watched the Friday night (I think it was) fights!

My dad had an ashtray from the 1939 World's Fair that he had been to. He'd quit smoking cigars and pipes by the time I was born but he still had his pipe rack and humidor and I once tried chewing the tobacco! (Never tried smoking it for some reason.) He had some long-stemmed pipes that still smelled of tobacco and good wood -- delicious fragrance!

My most vivid memory is the JFK funeral on TV and sitting watching the News with my dad. Secondary is the cold wind on my legs in the winter because we couldn't wear pants in elementary school. I had to walk a couple blocks to school too. The liquid polio vaccine that we drank.

I don't know why but I vividly remember our gym outfit from middle school. It was a dark red cotton onesie the shorts had cuffs and it snapped up the middle. Thankfully I don't remember the actual gym classes themselves. I do remember swim class though, we had red one peice suits. Remember synchronized swimming? That's what we did.

Our gym suits were a blue one piece thing. I think the swim suits were black one piece.

When I was in college we were required to take 2 semesters (I think it was) of physical education. There were a variety of different things you could take... some of which really didn't have much to do with phys. ed.

One thing I took was horseback riding. I vaguely recall being on this old hay burner ambling around a fenced area when, for some unknown reason, the horse decided it had had enough of me & tried & buck me off. Fortunately I managed to hang on & not go flying head first into the fence, which is what he was aiming for.

Another thing I took was ice skating. When I was signing up for the class I asked if it was for students who wanted to learn how to ice skate or if it was for students who already knew how to skate. They assured me it was for the former. When I arrived at the ice rink the first day of class they had already broken out the hockey sticks & a couple of students were skating down the length of the rink... backwards.

We had an ice skating rink in elementary school but no one taught you how to skate, it was a free for all kind of thing. You brought your own skates from home and whoever wanted to skate from 1st grade to 6th went out on the ice together. I begged for skates, I wanted hockey skates but girls didn't get to wear them back then. I played hockey anyway. I do remember when I learned to skate backwards it was thrilling. You just copied those who knew how.

We were at a local hardware store today. And in the aisle where they had candy I noticed they had... candy necklaces!

I remember those. I remember in sixth grade there was a lot of adults worried about candied dots. Strips of waxy paper with rows of colored dot candy. LSD was big back then.

Yep, homemade Halloween treats, and unwrapped or giver-wrapped candy...

Costumes with actual masks, too!

When Bubble Yum first came out. My pal and I bought all the Bubble Yum in the neighborhood and took it to school and marked it way up and sold it all in a day.

pay phones that cost a dime, for local calls, and long distance operators that were real people you could speak to.

When we landed on the moon. I was little, but I will never forget sitting on my living room floor with my parents watching that. For me, still to this day probably the single biggest news story of my life.

One particular historical event that sticks in my mind is the Cuban Missle Crisis. (The year was 1962. I would have been 14.) At the time (for reasons that would be too complicated to go into) I had to walk through my parent's bedroom to get to mine. And I still recall one night standing at the foot of my parents' bed in the dark & my mother saying it looked as though there was going to be a war...
