Yes, I remember we couldn't wear pants to school after third grade. Some girls rebelled when I was in high school and we were allowed to wear pants. I never understood the rule--especially when girls started wearing mini skirts and short, short dresses!

The rule is for Men. Later, in the early 70's, I worked at a state hospital and we were told the women couldn't wear shorts in the summer as male residents might put their hands up the shorts. It was a large meeting and in my best "dumb female" voice I asked if we could wear short skirts. "Sure" the boss says. "Why?" I asked "Isn't it easier to put your hand up a skirt?"---apparently the boss preferred skirts to shorts, had Nothing to do with the residents. __________________ "...don't say Home / the bones of that word mend slowly...' marie harris |

Anyone remember when ladies had to wear hats and gloves, to places like churches?
And being able to go barefoot in public places? |

Oh yeah, I remember playing outside all day in a swimsuit and then my friends and I piling into the seat of the pickup ( just one long bench seat with no sear belts) sitting on each other and driving to the ice cream shop where we piled out, suits, maybe a pair of cut offs over our bottoms sans shoes and we'd take over the little shop all calling out our favorite cones. Fun for us, a headache I bet for the guy who scooped the cones. Then sitting on the wooden porch benches while we ate our cones. Ahh the days of lazy Summer's before they organized leagues and sports into regimented games.

Yes, and lots of smoking in doctors and nurses. And ash trays everywhere.

I might have a very vague memory of ladies wearing gloves. I definitely remember going barefoot in the summer...my older sister would take me to the grocery store and we'd both have bare feet. The cold linoleum in the floor of the store felt so good in the heat of summer. __________________ |

Oh yes, I would watch the churchgoers on Sunday, women wore hats to church and men took them off in church. Gloves too for the women. (my mother had several pairs, white with round pearly buttons, they were long...) & hats with veils, for funerals, sometimes for church or just because.
Remember handkerchiefs of cloth that were washed and ironed and used again?(I know they are still sold but I don't know any users...except as a decorative pocket item) Ladies smallish and often lace-trimmed, men's large... I remember a common sight---women with curlers in their hair grocery shopping, curlers to be removed in the evening. (and--ugh--housecoats) __________________ "...don't say Home / the bones of that word mend slowly...' marie harris |

How about the days before hand-held hair dryers, when you had to sit under a hood that blew out warm air?

And there were just a few professional careers really open to women--such as nurse, teacher, secretary.....

.....and only until they married. Many of the women I went to the university with did not expect to graduate, they were just passing time waiting for their other half to graduate then we're getting married. I remember my first grade teacher, she got married and quit teaching. That was a shame cause she was a great teacher. All my other teachers were unmarried or men.

Before our time teachers were not allowed to marry, from my understanding. Sigh.

Yes, and if you research history of school shootings in the 1800 and early 1900s, many of the few that occurred were men coming to kill their schoolteacher "sweetheart" in the classroom
