Given the current emphasis on avoiding crowds, as a result of the coronavirus, I thought some might derive amusement from watching an old CBS "Sunday Morning" piece by (now retired) Bill Geist. Back in 2008, with fuel shortages & economic woes, people in the U.S. were encouraged to vacation at home. This is Geist's take on the concept of the "staycation":

Anybody else remember the Russian TP shortage and food lines? That's what I think of when I see all the empty shelfs photos

Some hippies I knew who used phone books for toilet paper. (I think we're getting our comeuppance for doing away with big, thick phone books )

I actually remember when Sears and Roebuck catalog pages were used as TP. That use could be a good way to deal with junk mail.
I also remember the gas shortage. At least maybe self-isolation will cut down on gas expense now. Hubby just went to the drug store for some vitamins and such. Otherwise, he isn't getting out much and me not at all. |

I didn't watch soaps but a friend was hooked on Dark Shadows.

Since more women are working, that's why there's very few soaps now, I guess.
Do you all remember when you had to go through an operator to make a long distance call? ANd you could reverse the charges, meaning the person you called had to pay for it. |

I do remember that and I remember there was cheating too. People would make a person to person collect call just to tell their parents or sweetheart that they got home just fine but the person would say they wouldn't accept charges but they all ready heard the message. It was common on sit-comes to do that.

When I was little we had an Easter Egg candy bakery in town. You could go there and special order coconut cream Easter eggs with one's name inscribed on them. We were six kids and my mother always went and special ordered eggs with each of our names on them. Of course I didn't know this until I was older because they came from the Easter Bunny.

I couldn't understand what the big deal was about showing Elvis below the waist when he was performing some songs. |

all of the above
Remember clipping baseball cards, with laundry clips, to bicycle spokes to make a cool sound? and, in NY anyway, police had red lights...not blue Yellow Checker cabs with pull up extra stool seats in the rear The hurdy gurdy man and monkey, hot chestnuts The original Penn Station (still comes to me in dreams at times)--and paying a nickel in the bathroom to an attendant who then gave you a cloth towel to dry hands with The first color tv on the block and, of course, as always, candy cigarettes... there was something I thought of the other day that I can't retrieve right now...hmmm __________________ "...don't say Home / the bones of that word mend slowly...' marie harris |
