Default Your favorite memories (good things)

I remember the celebrations my family had at my aunt and uncle's house on Christmas Eve. We had a big meal, the children presented a little Christmas program, and then we opened gifts. My Uncle Lyne always gave us cool presents such as a Parcheesi game and Winnie the Pooh books.

Well... I have to say, in all honesty, I can't think of many favorite memories. It's not even that I had all that bad a childhood. It's just that almost every memory (the few I have left... as I get older-&-older they're becoming fewer-&-fewer) that should perhaps be a good memory is tied to some other memory that's not.

I guess one memory I have of which I am fond is traipsing through the woods & fields where we lived while I was a teenager... especially in the spring & fall. I'd put on my coat, hat & rubber boots ("packs" we called them back then) & go wandering about all alone. Remembering it brings a smile to my face. I wish I could do it again. But, even if I did, it wouldn't be the same...

I remember how nice my first grade teacher was. She drew pictures on the blackboard which utilized the letter of the alphabet we were learning--like a queen made out of a "Q." And she was kind and smelled good.

I remember my dog... Sandy. (She was sort-of a beagle mix... white with large medium brown patches & black patches around the eyes.) I was about... oh... 8 or 9 I guess. I had been asking my parents for a dog. At the time we lived in a small city in a rented house that had a large open porch. One morning we got up & there was a puppy curled up asleep on the porch by our front door. The house next door had a porch that was half enclosed with a rug on the floor & a couch in the enclosed end. But the puppy curled up on our bare front porch. I don't know if my parents tried to find the puppy's owner. But, either way, she became my dog.

After Sandy had been with us for about a year or so, she disappeared one day & was gone for a week or two. I was distraught. One morning I was upstairs in bed. I heard my father saying something like... go on... go upstairs... It was Sandy. She was back! I remember my father mentioning there had been a news report of a dog being fished out of the river that ran through town. We never knew if that was Sandy. But we wondered.

Unfortunately there's sort-of a sad ending to this story. (I know this thread is supposed to be just about good things. And Sandy's presence in my life was a very good thing. But I can't tell this story without bringing it to it's conclusion.) Years later we had moved out to the country. (That is a story in-&-of itself.) Sandy had had a bare spot, about the size of a quarter, on her side for quite a while. My parents never took her to the vet. (They never took me to the doctor or the dentist either unless it was absolutely necessary. We were poor.) Eventually Sandy was not doing well. So my parents finally decided to take her to a vet. The morning we were to take her, I went outside to fetch her. She was laying on her side in the sun beside the house... dead. We buried her out behind the foundation of an old barn that had long since been torn down.

A good memory is one that was such fun...carefree days. When I was a high school senior my friends and I would dress up every Saturday night and go to the midnight movie, which was The Rocky Horror Picture Show. 42 nights! I cannot recall any other time in my life that was purely fun, without a care in the world - except how my "Magenta" make-up looked.

This is a strange one I haven't thought of in many years. Living in the heart of the city, hunting was not of my culture. What we did was try to shoot houseflies with rubber bands when the flies landed on the side of the garage. We seldom hit one, but it was like a game for bored little boys during long summers. Sorry to those of you who object to cruelty to houseflies.

"As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods; they kill us for their sport." ---Shakespeare

I remember the fun time I had cutting paper "dolls" out of catalogs and playing with them.

Shakespeare must have grown up in Detroit, too! I wonder if he lived in my 'hood? Thanks for the neat quote!

Thanks for sharing this! ... I still carry on the tradition ... I keep rubber bands laying about in various locations just for the purpose ... I tell flies when they come in the house that they'd better find a way out before sundown or else they'll be dead ... I've gotten quite good and picking them off too, and it's way more challenging (and fun) than using a regular old flyswatter ... May the fly gods have mercy on them & me!

Visiting the old garage run by two of my favorite uncles (still love the smell of burning oil to this day)!
