I can deal fine with one or the other but when there is a new (Hey, body hasn’t done that before) AND BP1 with rapid cycling that seems to be speeding up as I get older (gotta love that new nugget O fun), it just gets to be too much.
Like right now...after a mini break to the FL DW Mouse House with the daughter and the grand, I experienced a LOT of edema in my feet and lower legs from chasing a determined mother with not so great “chill out” skills. The hubby was extremely concerned when he picked us up at the airport but I calmed him saying it would go away in a few days. Well...that was late August. I still have swelling in my feet and legs and now my face is feeling jealous and is doing a hellova job mimicking a Puffer Fish. I have HBP when I cycle into manic but manageable either way with meds. Add to that a jumpy nervous system as I taper off yet another “non narcotic” pain med...Tramadol...which I recommend now only to my arch enemies, that crap is demon spawn...anyway, with all this crazy half century plus body drama AND a hit or miss mental stability - how do you guys cope? I want to stay away from controlled meds since they hate me even though I love them...too much in my younger years and know that I might be wiser...I’m still not much smarter so, no fun drugs for this old hippie. Just questing for ideas and suggestions. Thanks. |

I don't have a lot to offer here. I'm 70 years old. But for the most part I've been pretty darned healthy physically throughout my life. I've said a few times that if I had been as healthy mentally as I've been physically, I'd have been a real danger!
I know good physical health can't last. Something is going to crop up sooner or later. But so far I'm still hangin' in there. (I have a few different things going on that could turn out to be something at some point. But at this point I just ignore them.) My wife & I did sell our single family home a few years ago & we bought a townhome. So that eliminated a really large chunk of stuff I used to have to do. One thing that I find to be important to me at this point is routine. With a few periodic variations, I pretty-much do the same things day-in & day-out in more-or-less the same order. |

Awesome that you are in good shape. I some how managed twelve years active duty Army as a research microbiology tech but despite the rather cushy digs and climate controlled base camps, there was still a lot of bodily punishment thru the years so I’m sure these contributed to my joint issues. I’ve been better off than my slightly older sister who was in for twenty-one years and is on her way to becoming a cyborg with metal pieces and parts replacements.
I probably shouldn’t complain as my husband and I are in better shape than most but this cycle flipping gaining speed has me flummoxed. In the past, I would go about one or two years between major, tear it all down, manic events. Now, the meds keep the highs tempered and the lows less dark but I’d like to get off the coaster every now and then and just maintain without a giant pill box to go with it. I am incredibly grateful I don’t yet need any antipsychotics or antidepressants (once I get this Tramadol bodily dependency finished anyway). I was told when the doc put me on it that it had SSRI chemicals in the mix but in the past I’ve been on several SSRIs and MOAIs and NEVER had the issues I’m having with this crap when I tapered off them. I may find a mountain top to shout from on the evils of this stuff. I’ve done cold turkey stops from cocaine, alcohol and methadone in my sordid history that did not bother me as much as this has. I’m a LOT older though but never once abused the dosing or even took a maximum recommended dose either. Crazy. Anyway, I hope your good health carries you onward. I’ll go back in my corner and mumble about the lack of judgement my twenty - forty year old self had on being kind to the body I now have to wrestle with. |

I'm sorry you're having to deal with both physical and mental problems at the same time. I'm blessed that I've been stable with BP for almost 8 years, now that my body is acting up. Just had surgery on a torn meniscus. Are you seeing a therapist? I find that helpful. I also take pain meds, up from tramadol to zohydro.
Do you have a good primary care doctor? I'm finding that helpful, too. |

I don’t go to a physical therapist but I do self treat with reiki and acupressure which helps but years of Army abuse to the joints are tough to overcome. I’m researching CBD oil and hoping my state passes med THC this summer. Thanks for responding! |
