I'd tell mine that 65 is not elderly. I'm just "young old." One doctor told me recently that the drug she was going to prescribe me "worked well with the elderly." I felt like saying, "So?"

Well... being 71 I accept I am, in fact, elderly (physically at least. Mentally / emotionally is another story entirely.) I don't have the "young doc" problem... yet anyway. My primary care doc is roughly the same age I am! He comes off as kind-of a sourpuss. I don't have occasion to see him often. But the few times I have, he's done a good job for me.

What bugs me she hasn’t asked me to call her by her first name yet she uses mine.

I don't have the young doctor problem yet either. I'm new to senior hood and my doctor is in his 50's and as a great plus he's a listener! I dread the day I need a youngwhipersnapper to tell me I'm elderly.

I go to doctors who are associated with a medical school, so sometimes we get interns, who are very young. I think the doc who "suggested" that I'm elderly is probably in her young forties or so.
I don't like doc who immediately assume they can call me by my first name either. |

Another thing....my “elderly” body doesn’t tolerate meds the way it used to! How about an overhaul? ( I got one)

That's one thing I like about the clinic I go to that I like. They have a policy in place to review meds once a year, I mean any time and any specialist they go over your meds but once a year they do an in depth, do you need this? And check for interactive meds. Since I was a senior when I moved here I don't know if it's a senior thing or something they do with every one. But it makes me feel better.

I'd like to tell any doctor to stop asking me the same questions they have asked before--like "Have you ever smoked?"
"Oh, yeah, I took that up last week and then stopped." |

Ha ha that and drinking. I always feel the need to be honest and say yes, then asked when and how much, I have to think about it and then admit that no, I hadn't had a drink since I last saw him. I think of myself as a social drinker but picky. I don't like beer, I don't like this or that and I'm very picky about wine. So usually I ask to taste something and then don't drink because it's usually wine and beer so I don't drink but only because I'm so picky.

I would like to tell my young doctor that I am in charge of my body not her. She is there to make suggestions that will either choose to take or deny. That is the job. If other people respond "how high" when you tell them to jump, that is good for you. But I am not one of those people.

Just wait, little girl. You'll find out that everything in life is not in your control.

Here in the UK at the moment, it would be nice to get an appointment!!
Some doctors think they're God, some patients believe they are. Just before pandemic my doctor told me he considered I was diabetic. Wanted another blood test to confirm. All arranged then got text cancelling. Two weeks later, another text to remind me of follow up appointment. Pointed out it would be waste of time (on both sides) as there was nothing to discuss. Heard nothing since they acknowledged my message. Not even a phone call to find out how I am. Attitude towards older patients is awful. I'm 65. Have attended appointments with 85 year old mother. After not monitoring her properly before pandemic, they're also now ignoring her too (different doctors to mine). |
