Default Is there an unmet need?

I'm at a point where I can't stop looking and masturbating to porn. And I wonder if there is an unconscious unmet need in me that I automatically try to fill by doing these things. It's not all just chemistry, it can't be. Or just sexual. Alcohol addicts have similar reasons why they act out. So there is the need, the trigger that leads to fantasizing about a fulfillment to that need. My question is what really is that unconscious need and how can it be filled in a different way?

I'm sorry I don't know the answer to your question. However here are links to 3 articles, from PsychCentral's archives, on the subjects of pornography & sex addiction & masturbation that may be of some interest:

Default Re: Is there an unmet need?

As somebody who was cross-addicted to porn and is now in recovery almost four years, I can say that I used both for basically the same reasons...to relieve stress and anxiety. I drank around people. I used porn by myself. From what I learned in treatment and continue to learn in therapy, addiction is more of a symptom of a bigger problem. It's how we deal with that problem. Sometimes the hardest part is figuring out what that problem is. I too am bipolar, but I think that just made the final diagnosis harder. I don't think they really had much to do with each other.

For me, the unment need is intimacy and closeness. I use cyber-sex to try to fulfill those unmet needs when I'm feeling lonely. I don't know if I would go so far as to say I have an addiction, but I know I have a problem.

It's scary, though, thinking about giving up that unhealthy coping mechanism. Because it means those needs could potentially go unmet for even longer. That's what makes it so hard.

I have struggled with finding my trigger... right now it's I want sex but can't have it. It's challenging I started reading erotica, but that has made it worse. I suggest getting away for a while... having celibacy. I know it's hard and I also know it does help gain some perspective. Ultimately it's your journey. What do you want??

Maybe porn isn't cutting it and you just need the real thing. Get on Tinder and start swiping!
