Well hi there!

just left therapy about an hour ago, figured Id sign up and see if this group could help me. Ive been diagnosed with Bipolar, Depression & Anxiety and just recently my therapist have been recommending SLAA don't no much about it but im determined to do my best so that I can stop messing up my life.

It seems I have commitment issues with everything. The moment I get comfortable and too happy I find a way to mess it all up and sabotage my life again. Its a pattern, I've done it countless times and quit over 20 jobs because of it. I have no idea why im like this, and next **** up will be my marriage (My only Stability) if I don't stop screwing around. Im so lost & just trying to find my way.

Thanks for reading!

Had not heard of it before so looked it up - is this it?

https://slaafws.org/download/core-fi...ps_of_SLAA.pdf

Seems extremely religiously loaded and judgemental, I would not be at all happy if my therapist recommended this for me. Personally having read each of these steps they seem more like indoctrination than therapy and potentially damaging.

Carmina it's a 12 step program that originated with AA. Your higher power could be blade of grass. It doesn't really matter.

So I see, I'd just not come across it before as an approach and was rather shocked tbh. I'm not wanting to get into a discussion about the religious aspects, that wouldn't be helpful to the OP, but I just suggest there are likely to be more up-to-date alternatives that are less judgemental and more evidence based that they could also explore.

For example this is one technique I use to help with impulse control:

I actually like SAA better. There also is SA, and SRA. I think there is one more but I can't remember.

But I stopped going. I found another group that I like better.

It all depends on you.

Welcome to PC!

I found SLAA to be very helpful. I only went for a few months, but I can say that the lessons I learned have lasted a life time. Eventually, I DID get tired of the "overly preachy"ness of it (All the people in my group but one was a Christian and I was a fledgling Buddhist, but this may have more to do with my geographic location in SW Ohio than anything about the organization). After hearing Jordan Peterson and Russel Brand talk together, I was able to see the MERIT in the 12-step group without letting any of the religious themes get to me. But again, even though it wasn't a PERFECT fit, it was some of the best, FREE group work I've ever experienced. 9/10, would highly recommend, even for just a few visits to learn the basics.

Yeah from what i just read SLAA seems a little religious and culty, but if you think that'll help, then by all means go for it.

The fact that you've sabotaged over 20 jobs because of impulsivity tells me that you might be experiencing manic episodes. Do you take medication for your bipolar disorder? When I was working at a facility for mental illness, I had a couple of clients who really messed up their lives during manic episodes, and it could've been prevented with the right dosage of medication.

Finding the right diagnosis always comes first. Addiction is a symptom of something greater.

For sure, but they said they've already been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
