Default Sex addiction research/treatment

I am a 35 year old sex addict in the navy. I have been struggling to receive treatment due to troubles with Tricare. My CSAT strongly recommends residential treatment, however with a lack of emperical evidence/research to show that residential treatment center does help with sex addiction (not to mention it not being in the DSM-5), it has been difficult to even receive a necessary waiver to essentially force Tricare to pay for it.

I have addicted to internet sex chat for a long time, I want to stop but cannot. I am married.

I am just so confused about how come Sex Addiction (or it's various names) did not make it into the DSM-5, but other things like Internet Gaming Disorder can?

Unfortunately there's nothing I myself can offer with regard to your concerns. However here are links to some articles, from Psych Central's archives, that may be of some interest. The first link is to an article on internet addiction by our host Dr. John Grohol, Psy.D. The second link is to a series of articles on the topic sex & intimacy in the digital age. The remaining four links are to articles that discuss how to change a bad habit:

Internet Addiction and Online Addiction

Sex and Intimacy | Sex, porn addiction and intimacy in relationships in a digital age

The Neuroscience of Bad Habits and Why It's Not About Will Power

The Golden Rule of Habit Change

Science Says This Is How to Break Any Bad Habit

My best wishes to you...

they say diagnosing sex addiction is complicated. I've googled hypersexuality and read stuff from mayoclinic, wikipedia, and psychologytoday for information about sexual disorders. there's even a book at my local library about sexual disorder

I'm so sorry you're struggling, sexaddictintrouble I understand your doubts. Is there anything we can do to help you? Please let us know. I know it's hard. Perhaps you could try to read some book on the subjects if you can't get official treatment. Keep trying with that, though. I hope you'll get the help you need. I'm so sorry, I wish I've had more advice. Feel free to PM me anytime. Let me know if I can do something to help you. Wish you good luck! Let us know how it goes. Sending many hugs to you

You're married but you're having tons of webcam sex? Why not just sleep with your wife?! lol

Also, you can probably get Tricare to pay if you just say the treatment is for an actual diagnosable disorder, like depression or anxiety. I'm in Canada, so I'm not sure how that system works.

I'd love to know why the dsm5 doesn't have it in there too but we just have to keep trying to get out in the dsm5 . Have you tried going to a 12 step meeting? I know they are helpful, but not for everyone. Please keep in mind that treatment centers are expensive but not the only option.

Hi I'm hoping this is going to be helpful as I feel like I'm loosing myself and porn and sex addiction has been the culprit, it has slowly crept up on me subconsciously thinking I could manage it and control it, I've found porn to be a powerful addiction which has led me to be taking away from my famliy and being sectioned as I tried to take my life, I've now become to realise that porn strips you of everything and is like a drug, I want to beat this awful debiliting addiction and I will for my famliy sake and mine.
