I believe you may have this - Sado-masochism

I don't think that there's anything wrong with you. Here's an interesting article that you might get some answers from:

Hi there.

We're all happy to help, but we need a little more information on the subject before we can help. How long has this been going on, how old are you, to what extent does this occur...etc. The more we know, the more we can offer.

Additionally, this is a forum, and it takes a bit for replies to come in. We only see your topic when we happen to come to this section. With SO many subsections to the site, it can be awhile.

At first glance, it sounds like masochism (sado-masochism refers to the dual enjoyment of both inflicting and receiving pain), which is sexual pleasure derived from pain. Usually, I'd tell you as long as it's not to a point you are causing yourself severe harm or putting yourself at risk, it's not much to be worried over, provided you're safe about it (like most other things of a sexual nature). However, if it bothers you, we'll need a little more info, if you don't mind.

BTW Doc, on your status, is that the actual lyrics to the song??? That's been a source of debate in my house for years...yet none of us thought to google the thing. -_-

Im 26 and this is new.
I recently started to talk about the way i feel when i cut myself (i cut since i was 19). I noticed that often when i self harm i get aroused.
I was abused as a child (dunno know how old I was, under 6 for sure) but there was no pain involved cuz i was only touched and the guy was "nice" to me.
So i dont think theres a connection.

I know its masochism, i just want to know WHY. Why i need this? Why i want it so bad.

Abuse can have lots of effects, some of which are unexpected to the person. It may be worth looking into with a therapist. I think, though, I can take a crack at your question.

When you cut, your brain releases endorphins. Endorphins give a sense of "well being" (Wikipedia...not the best source, I know, but stay with me here ) when introduced into the body. When hurt, such as when you cut, they're released to give you enough of a "boost" to get out of whatever situation you're in (speaking to the "fight or flight" response). It works quite like gunshot victims not knowing they've been shot due to adrenaline.

Endorphins also happened to be released during orgasm. My guess is that you've "linked" sexual release and pain release, and are thus seeking the next endorphin "hit," if you will. People who try to stop cutting often encounter difficulty due to an "addiction" to the activity. The addiction isn't to cutting itself, but to that endorphin release.

Please note that I am not a doctor, thus this should be taken with a grain of salt. I would still highly recommend you seek a therapist to discuss that past abuse.

I hope I was able to be of some help.
