I am here to understand my sometimes anxious behaviour. I live with depression, but I feel my main issue is the inability to sleep. This gets me into trouble (I wander into unsafe neighborhoods at night). I have a Family member who has been permanently hospitalized with schizophrenia. Our gene-pool is very much alike (we both favor our Dad). I am concerned my condition will become much worse with time. I can feel it happening.

Welcome to PsychCentral, unlikemostothers. There's a forum, here on PC, dedicated to the subject of sleep and dream issues. Here's a link to that forum just in case you haven't already found it:

And then here are links to some articles, from PsychCentral's archives, that may be of interest:

Welcome, unlikemostothers,

There's a good chance that by addressing your concerns now, which is what you're doing, things will actually improve for you. Yes, it'll be okay.

Hi unlike,

That's rough that you can't sleep. Not sleeping can make mental illness worse. Have you talked to a doctor about this? You might be able to get some medicine to help you sleep. And if you have other mental health concerns, you can talk about them too.

I am sorry you are having troubles with trying to sleep.

Why do you go into unsafe neighborhoods when you cannot sleep?

I have rather severe sleep issues. I stay in at through the night.
I had a sleep consult with a sleep doctor and will have a sleep study soon.

Is a sleep study an option for you?
My pdoc gave me the referral, as the sleep meds we've tried have not helped.

It's very important to get sleep. Neurotransmitters are made when we sleep, for one thing. We all need our neurotransmitters.

Welcome to PC!

I hope you will find the information and the support you may be seeking.
please do jump in and make yourself at home.
I hope to see you around the forums.

The thought of a condition potentially getting worse as time passes and not knowing what to do can be a bit frightening, I know. Perhaps if you can find ways to force yourself to sleep that could help because lack of sleep can actually have detrimental effects on pretty much anyone. (Putting myself out there, when I can't sleep I watch asmr on youtube.)

Also, I too have had a family member diagnosed with schizophrenia but it doesn't "run in my family". So maybe this could be the case with you and your family as well. Hope you can get the help you need. Rooting for you.

I've been taking Trazadone for sleep. This is the third medication I have tried. Not working either.

Sleep aid is not working. Back seeking thrills in unsafe neighborhoods. Need the excitement. Need the upheaval, the unbalance.
