Hi there -

As of recent years, i've adopted troubles with sleep whether it be poor quality sleep, anxious and unpleasant dreams, or not being able to sleep at all.

I began taking a melatonin supplement (3mg) with B6 (10mg) and calcium (63mg) which has been helping surprisingly well.

Not only am I usually able to get proper rest but i've been realizing a rather significant connection between nights that I take the supplement and nights that I don't. I noticed right away after taking the supplement for a few nights that my dreams were far more vivid, intricate, and continuous but they also appeared much more enjoyable (rather than my typical anxiety and hurt filled dreams). I wondered if it was a fluke but upon several days intermittently taking the supplement i'm aware of the amazing difference within my quality of sleep and dreamstates.

When I don't take the supplement, I more often than not wake up depressed due to the lack of quality rest and unfavorable dreams but nights I take the supplement, my dreams are wonderful, uplifting, and I wake up happy and hopeful. I'm hoping this will continue for me and it's not just a temporary coincidence.

Has anybody else experienced this miracle?

How does melatonin affect your dreamstates?

Thanks

Hello trixi: I believe this is your first post here on PC. So... welcome to Psych Central.

Thanks for sharing your experience with Melatonin. I did try it at one point but it didn't cause me to sleep any better than usual & I was always groggy all the next day. So it's not something I would take. But everyone's different & it sounds as though it's been positive for you. So that's great!

Here are links to 5 articles, from Psych Central's archives, on the subject of how to get a good night's sleep:

I hope you find PC to be of benefit.

I had lots of nightmares on Melatonin, but that may just be me!
I'm glad it works for you.

It's pretty cool how the human body functions and let's our consciousness know when we need more vitamins and minerals to help us operate better. I once dreamed that I was vitamin B deficient. I mean, I woke up with the very clear messgage, "you are low in all your B vitamins." So, kooky me, asked my doctor to check my B levels. She obliged me and whala -- low in all of my B vitamin levels!

If you listen to your body, a la intuition or sense something's "off" you need to address it, even if feels strange.

Stick with your regimen of melatonin supplement (3mg) with B6 (10mg) and calcium (63mg) because your body responds to it 100%. That's awesome that you found the right combination of natural supplements to help you sleep. Stay away from those scary OTC sleep aids.
