Basically what happens is I wake up not breathing - my chest feels like I've breathed out too far and am still breathing out. It used to be that I had to jerk my head to the side to pull myself out of it but now I can wake myself up when I start to feel it and prevent it with a few deep breaths. A few times I decided to see what would happen if I didn't fix it. Every time it feels like my body, but especially my head, starts shaking/vibrating and the back of my neck starts burning. The longer I go the harder it is to get out of it and the more I feel like I'm shaking. The longest I ever went I felt like I was about to throw up, and when I finally got out of it my heart was pounding and I was shaking all over for half an hour. It used to happen at random times at night, but now it pretty much exclusively happens when I'm napping on the couch. Does this sound similar to anything anyone's experienced?

Thanks for posting this. Unfortunately I don't know what to tell you about it. I think it is something that probably needs to be investigated by medical professionals... perhaps at a sleep clinic. I've had sleep paralysis periodically most of my life; but what you describe doesn't resemble what I've experienced.

What you've described does sound more like a sleep apnea sort of thing to me. But that's just a guess on my part. I do hope you're able to find some answers though. Sleep paralysis can be terrifying (especially when you don't understand what's going on which I didn't for many years.) I would guess that what you're experiencing is pretty terrifying when it occurs too. Best wishes...

Hi, In my own experience of sleep apnea it sounds like that's what you're describing. If you talk with your GP s/he will refer you to a sleep clinic and they'll test you for apnea. The test is extremely easy. Sleep apnea feels really scary, and it can have negative health repercussions.

You should have a sleep study regardless of what it is.
