College is so hard when you have social anxiety. I hate people looking at me, especially walking into class. If I'm late I'll usually just skip because I'm too afraid to walk inside. Even when I'm sitting in class I'm so uncomfortable, I imagine that everybody is watching every movement I make and so I try so hard not to do anything that might appear "weird". Like I'll be too paralyzed by my anxiety to cough or to drink some water. It's awful. I always imagine everybody is staring at me. I always think I look weird or stupid. I spend most of my time sitting in the library cubicles because no one could see me, it's the only time I'm actually not anxious. I wish I could be invisible

I'm sorry you are struggling with this. Getting through college can be challenging enough without having to endure social anxiety as well. Here are links to some articles, from PsychCentral's archives, on the subject of how to manage social anxiety:

My school has a "student disability and resource center" that can help get students with disabilities appropriate academic accommodations. At my school, for example, if you have documentation that you have a social anxiety disorder (among other disabilities), you can get an accommodation where you don't have to give speeches in front of classes but instead just in front of the teacher I think. There are other possible accommodations to help you out to. I would look into this and see if your school has something similar. They probably do. Also, most universities have some sort of counseling/therapy center that is free to students. I would make use of that. Mine also has a group for people with social anxiety.
Anyway, as someone who is just about to graduate and who has lived with social anxiety for most of her life, I know it's not easy. So I feel you! I hope you can find some resources that are helpful though. Keep challenging yourself and exposing yourself to the anxiety-provoking situations! You can and will get through this. Best of luck! |
