I am looking for a therapist with expertise in treating social anxiety. None of the psychologists within my provider network advertise social anxiety as one of their specialties. However, a handful of them list anxiety as a specialty.

Do therapists that advertise expertise in social anxiety have to have a certification? Is it safe to assume that a therapist who only lists anxiety as one of their areas of expertise but not social anxiety isn't qualified to treat social anxiety?

I don't think you need a special certificate to specialize in treating a certain disorder, but I may be wrong. I believe you just have to have experience and suscess with dealing with those disorders.

That being said, I don't think doctors who say or don't say they specialize in something means they can't treat it successfully.

My therapist "specialized" in ADHD, Autism, and Generalized Anxiety but she was the best therapist I ever had (I'm diagnosed with SAD and SM). She taught me CBT and mindfulllness skills no other therapist ever really taught me.

I've found it hard to find a good therapist for specific needs before...now after many have found a few good ones....I think the relationship you share is key. Finding someone you're comfortable with will help you not worry about their credentials.
