I suffered all my life thinking I was just shy...but now I realize it was trauma related and addiction and depression are all correlated.

Yes, social anxiety is certainly something I struggled with all of my life although I never really thought of it in those terms. I just knew I was uncomfortable around people plus I had a severe aversion to public speaking. I'm getting older now though & as I've aged I've become pretty-much thoroughly reclusive.

Here are links to 6 articles, from PsychCentral's archives, 4 on the subject of social anxiety plus 2 on depression:

Social Anxiety Overview

6 Ways to Overcome Social Anxiety

7 Ways to Overcome Shyness and Social Anxiety

How a Traumatic Childhood Manifests in Social Anxiety | The Psychology of Self

Living with Depression: A Guide for Coping with Depressive Feelings

I hope you're finding PC to be of benefit.

Yes, you're right, PublishJosephNg.

I suffer with this as well. Quite severely. For some reason - and the psychologists have explained to me the reason according to the mental health paradigm - I start going mad and paranoid around strangers - and strangers are everywhere you go. It's a curse I tells you. But to hell with it, I'll get through my life in one piece.

I'm experiencing an improvement as time goes by though, so that's promising.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, PublishJosephNg! I'm sure many people can relate to what you wrote here, especially here on PC. You're definitely not alone in this. I'm so sorry you're going through all of this I don't know if I would say I suffer from social anxiety. I definitely feel anxious around people though. Although I believe social anxiety is much more serious than that. But I'd say I can relate a bit to what you have to say. I'm so sorry. Please don't give up. I'm sure you'll all be able to get through all of this. You're all strong, wonderful people. I'm glad you were able to realize that you have social anxiety, PublishJosephNg. Knowing it is the first step for fighting it. You've already done half of your battle. Keep it up! I'm sure you'll be able to get through this. Do you see a therapist? Maybe that could help. You could learn new ways to cope with your feelings. Either way, we're here for you if you need to talk about it. We all care about you here. We all love you here. Feel free to vent here as much as you want. You know we won't judge you. I promise you that. You're a wonderful person. Stay strong, PublishJosephNg. Stay safe and take care of yourself. You're awesome! You're strong! You're a warrior! Remember that we're here for you if you need it. Feel free to PM me anytime. Let me know if I can do something to help you. Wish you good luck! Let us know how it goes. I'm so sorry you have to deal with this Sending many hugs to you and to everyone

I too suffer from severe social anxiety and also depression. I always feel so awkward when I have to talk to people and I usually have no idea what to talk about. I feel so inferior. I really wish I could feel more comfortable and "normal" and I'd really like to have more friends in my life, but it's so difficult to put myself out there and to let people into my life. I'm a deeply caring and compassionate person and would like to have like minded friends in my life. I just don't know how and my anxiety gets in the way of me living the life I want.
