Default Social Anxiety

Hey, I know I have social anxiety but I've never been diagnosed with it.

I hate any type of social thing and I avoid them at all costs. If I did try and meet up with people that I do not really know, I would sit there and feel uncomfortable and feel like I cant join the conversation and I avoid eye contact. Or feel self-consciousness and worry I would say the wrong thing.

I cant do a presentation in front of a group of people.
I also hate calling people and takes ages to find the courage to call them. Also I avoid any incoming phone call that I do not know. Even on Facebook I always have the chat turned off incase someone trys to message me.

I've been debating going the doctors but unsure what time of help they could offer me.

Social anxiety is something I always struggled with (including group presentations.) Nowadays I've become pretty thoroughly reclusive. We have caller ID on our phone. And we only answer it if it's someone we want to talk to. Otherwise, whoever it is can leave a message if they want to. I couldn't recommend caller ID highly enough if anyone doesn't happen to have it. I'm not on Facebook or Twitter or any of that sort of stuff.

I don't know if there's really much a doctor could do for you, with regard to social anxiety, other than to prescribe some sort of anti-anxiety medication. Here are links to 3 articles, from PC's archives, that discuss treatment options for social anxiety plus one that offers a do-it-yourself technique:

Hello GhostFox,

I am so sorry that you are struggling. Thank you for sharing your truth. That's an important step in healing. I think the psych community has come a long way in helping folks with social anxiety. Meds are always an option but I tend to think of them as good for a last resort after other options have been explored.

Perhaps a therapeutic approach could be a good starting point? With an experienced therapist who specializes in social anxiety. I think desensitization may be useful for you. Gradually facing the triggering experiences just in very small increments step by step with a non-judgmental therapist giving you coping strategies and support. It sounds like this is significantly affecting your daily function so I recommend a chat with your local doc for a referral to a psychologist (PhD) or counselor with a master's degree.

I think when anxiety is unmanaged, it tends to grow. That has been my experience with it. I find acupuncture and guided meditation very helpful for relieving anxiety. Perhaps even being able to have an open conversation with a kind doctor could help you to start feeling less alone with the anxiety?

Hopefully being able to share on PC will also help. I wish you peace, hope, and a bright future!

I completely understand! I feel the same way! In my case? I been publicly humiliated. I noticed I tend to make people nervous around me. You are not alone!

That is great advice! I wish that I had thought about that myself! Great resources.
