Unhappy health anxiety and stress

I'm going through an episode of health anxiety where I'm convinced small injuries are signs of some debilitating neurological condition. I've been to the doctor twice and they don't seem to be concerned by my symptoms (arm feels like I trapped a nerve either in the elbow or wrist), saying that I need to give it time and take more ibuprofen.

I'm so focused on it that I literally feel like I am living inside my own body with minimal interest with the outside world. Most of my time is spent thinking about my symptoms, checking whether they are getting better or worse and worrying. Recently, I've bee so stressed that my body started twitching in random areas and I was close to having a panic attack a couple of times. I feel like I am going insane. I can't seem to accept my doctor's assessment that it's probably nothing to worry about. In the past, I used to accept their word straight away. I don't know why I am having such a hard time with this now.

I've started working with my therapist to overcome this, but in the meantime, does anyone have any advice on how I can start accepting what my family doctor thinks?

Have you seen a therapist about this? A lot of times when we are hyperfocused on something we think is physically wrong with us it is a result of other anxieties. Sometimes its feeling out of control or a loss of control. Sometimes our mental health is so bad it makes us feel physically ill. It annoys me that your doctor told you to just keep taking ibuprophen.. seriously? Pain relievers should not be thrown at someone just because the doctor doesnt believe you or cant find something wrong with you. They are hard on your liver and stomach and in some cases can affect your blood pressure.

yes, i've been in therapy for over a year for unrelated stuff. we are now addressing this as well.

You are not insane Merope. I suggest a consultation with a Physical Therapist. They may be able to help with the pain or even explain better what's going on with your body.

Personally, I don't think that anyone in 2019 should have to live with unmanaged chronic pain regardless of the cause. Also, ibuprofen is a serious drug even though it does not require a Rx. Please check with your pharmacist...mention your dosage, how long you've been taking etc. They know a lot about drugs that MDs do not. I always call my local pharmacist if I am taking any pills. They are very helpful and glad to share their knowledge.

Are you open to holistic ideas? I find acupuncture from an experienced TCM doctor (PhD in traditional chinese medicine) really helpful with anxiety,depression, and some physical ailments. The TCM doc literally got rid of my migraines which had bothered me for years. And acupuncture is SO relaxing!!!

How about meditation to help calm your mind? Check out some guided meditation videos on YouTube such as 'guided meditation to cope with pain' or 'guided meditation to relieve anxiety.' I try to do it every morning and night...it centers me regardless of what kind of day I'm having.

The problem is that anxiety can give you physical symptoms, so it is hard to tell what the cause is sometimes. It can cause nausea, dizziness, headaches, difficulty breathing, and even chest pains. I used to worry too much about my health too. I found it's better not to google my symptoms, because if I do I will find horror stories about what they could indicate, and that only makes my anxiety worse.

Conventional doctors don't normally know how to address things like that or brush things like this off until it worsens. I don't have health anxiety like you but also do not trust doctors. They brush people off, especially women or people with mental health diagnosis.

About your arm-shoulder, neck, rib, clavicle, or back issues can cause arm or wrist pain like that. Your ulnar nerve may be pinched or trapped, which is not uncommon. Try doing all over gentle yoga for 2 weeks and see if that leads to improvement. You can try Youtubing ulnar nerve entrapment stretches, start gently and see if that helps.

Your anxiety sounds really bad, so why not take zoloft or something (or do you already)?

Doctors are not infallible. They get it right sometimes and at others they get it wrong. Have you considered getting a second opinion from another doctor? One who will not gloss over it.

Maybe you have a ****** doctor? I had a doctor for 7 years because I was on Medicaid. She dismissed everything as anxiety. My mom said she didnít like me because I was on Medicaid. once I got off Medicaid I got a much better doctor and am now getting legit medical diagnosis everytime I see him.

I agree with getting a second opinion.

When I did not quite agree with what the doctor said, I learned all about what possible things could be wrong (I have carpal tunnel syndrome but did not think it was uncomplicated/regular carpal tunnel) and studied the differences with various possibilities and tried some vitamins and exercises/PT and made charts and graphs and kept a medical journal, etc. I have found that if you are "doing" something rather than just concentrating on symptoms, that can help alleviate the anxiety and you learn lots about yourself and be responsible and convince yourself what you do/do not have. It ends up interesting instead of scary.
