There are other members, here on PC, who would be better able to address this than I. But my understanding is that somatic disorders involve a person being concerned about physical symptoms that have no physiological basis. Munchausen's, I believe, involves causing oneself harm in order to gain attention (frequently of healthcare providers.) Munchausen's by proxy involves doing harm to another person (frequently a child) in order to gain attention. Here's a link to an article, from PC's archives, on somatic symptom disorder. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything comparable on Munchausen's:

Somatic Symptom Disorder

When people have real physical symptoms but they are caused by the mind.

Not sure who decided the brain is not a part of the body. :P

Munchausen syndrome
is a factitious disorder, a mental disorder in which a person repeatedly and deliberately acts as if he or she has a physical or mental illness when he or she is not really sick.

A somatic disorder is an unconscious reaction that occurs in the body, like a tic or spasm or stammering and is not a choice.
