I’m an introvert. Being shy or anxious are not the same things as introversion... I happen to be a shy, anxious introvert though. I worked hard overcome my social anxiety and shyness but I’ll always be an introvert.

I don’t like the bias against introverts. I get so aggravated when I watch a crime show and inevitably the murderer is described as a “socially awkward”.... “shy”..... introverted person.

I believe roughly half the world’s population is introverted. That means an awful lot of us are hiding our introversion to get ahead or fit in with society.

I agree there is a social bias toward extroverted people persons. It is challenging to make and keep friends when you are introverted. My husband left me because I couldn't bring people into our lives. It is a double whammy being neurotic and an introvert. All of this falls under accepting what I cannot change.

Sisabel: Thank you so much for your reply. Always great hearing from you. Yeah I agree that although shyness/social anxiety are not always inter-related, people in general are otherwise brainless and fickle when it comes to being absolutely perfect with what you say or do socially. If half of the population is introverted maybe it's just simply another way of being

Goforward: Now that is the most superficial thing for your husband to leave you over. I am so sorry that you had to go through that. Since I am an ambivert who has quite a bit of introverted friends I think you will eventually come across people who will accept you for who you are

I agree. This bias really is too bad and so wrong.

At the “least” people labelled as “shy” or “introverted” etc are labelled as “dull” by extroverts with inflated egos who don’t bother to attempt to get to know them. Shrugs, I find those judgmental A holes “dull and boring”

I love some straight forward honesty. You said it perfectly - its often the loudmouths who are often the most superficial and empty, not the other way around!

Hello DazedandConfused,

what an interesting thread! I read that most people are actually ambiverts: living with a combination of traits associated with introversion and extroversion. The previous research seems to have been somewhat misunderstood or skewed by society...full blown introversion or extroversion would fall on either end of the continuum with most people falling in the middle as ambiverts.

As far as social bias goes, I think it depends on the culture you live in. There is certainly a misunderstanding of introversion or even shyness (I realize those are not the same thing) in the U.S. But not all cultures perceive it that way. In some cultures, being reserved or "shy" is considered dignified, respectful, and desirable.

Did I detect a bit of bias against extroverts on the thread or was it just my imagination? We aren't saying "extrovert" is synonymous with "loudmouth" are we?

I say a person's a person. I've had friends who are mostly ambiverts but a couple of introverts and extroverts too. They all bring something different to the table. I'm not shy and I'm a talker...at parties I am known as the person who will bolster the shy folks...helping them to feel more comfortable. If I see someone standing alone, I'll head over and start a chat or include them in a group conversation. If that's what they want of course, reading non-verbal cues is really valuable. My partner says its one of the reasons he fell in love with me...that I make people feel safe.

I really enjoy this thread! I love discussions like this. Thank you!

I guess I am an extrovert but I’m struggling with that based on this thread because my perception of a extrovert isn’t at all what people here are experiencing with extroverts in their own lives. I love to talk but I talk to everyone. I’m told I can get anyone involved conversation and I feel like I am inclusive or at least try to be. I feel bad that people think extroverts are more popular or desirable or have better opportunities. I’m not saying anyone here thinks this or feels this way- a lot of emphasis is put on socializing and being liked. I know there are extroverts that want to be the center of attention and liked by everyone and maybe that’s why extroverts seem to be looked at as a polar opposite to introverts.

I love to talk (sometimes) and I like to talk with everyone. I’m not sure where I fall on any spectrum. Hugs to all

Good post
