I know it’s hard for victims of abuse to leave their abusers, I had a hard time myself. I think this article gives another perspective in why we have to leave our abusers, which is not only for the victim’s sake, but also for the abuser’s. Victims of abuse are often people who are very compassionate and empathetic, so trying to force them not to use their basic instinct as compassionate people so that they would leave their abusers might not be working all the time. What might work better is to give the victims an understanding that by leaving their abusers they do something good for the abusers as well, which is giving them a lesson that they cannot treat other the way they do as it will make others leave them.

I left after 31 years of abuse; one sentence helped me: "Try to let the side of you that is trying to save yourself....win.

Thank you for sharing this. I'm in a very confused place right now having just walked away from my abusive family (and sorting through all of my relationships). This is needed. Thank you again.
